The oil pump on the 95-99 2.3/2.5 (obd2) Lima engine is driven by the timing belt. They also changed the location for a few sensors.
The price quote you were given was probably for the older engine.

The oil pump on the newer block is one big round assembly that is behind the timing belt cover.

I have a question about the 96 2.3 in my ranger. The oil pump runs off timing belt.
Under the power steering pump is some kind of sensor. Is it an oil sending unit or something else? My truck acts like it jumped time , I've reset timing marks. can & oil pump gear were 1 tooth off . Not the problem. Been tracing wires. Crank position, can positioning sensors and found two partially melted wires. Under ps pump.does any know what it is ? Truck won't start.
