Hey guys. Haven't been on here awhile (gotten into another expensive hobby....firearms). Anyways here is the stats to start:
1996 Ranger Extended Cab 4x4
4.0L
Auto Tranny (4R55E right?)
Electric Shift Transfer Case
190,000kms
The story:
Back...two years ago maybe. When I was just a kid (still am who am I kidding). I got my ranger bone stock, jacked it up, put on 33's (toyos...heavy). And did NOT regear (had 3.73's back then). Drove like that for a year before I finally regeared (4.56's) but damage had been done, the tranny slipped a bit, flared up between shifts, felt overall weak.
Fast forward to yesterday. I find myself on a back road, some snow, not much, occasion bank of like 8 inches of snow. So I put it in 4x4 high. Blah blah blah, go to turn around in a field, but the edge of the road has a bunch of snow, so I gun it and try to get through back onto the road (still in 4x4 high, should've been 4x4 low but I did not want to lose my momentum) and boom I'm making it through its all good and then I get "stuck". I can't recall hearing any noises. But i thought I was stuck...but then I open the door and look out. Tires not spinning....even tho I am in drive and giving it some gas. EFF. Eventually I put it in first (as opposed to drive). Get out of the bank onto the road. Take it out of 4x4. Put it in drive go to leave....nothing...engine revving but no tires spinning. EFF. Put it in first and it goes, shift to second, takes awhile to shift but it went in second. Put it in drive...revs up and doesn't accelerate. But then it grabs and goes. Kinda. Basically really bad shifting. And at one point on my way of limping back to town. I turned into an approach and then put it in reverse to turn around and nothing...then I rev it up and it lurches back...nothign...then eventually goes. So overall...I knew this was coming....but my tranny is pretty screwed. I also kind of think it is the torque converter from what I am describing. But they are both kind of tired out. So I am thinking of swapping in a tranny/TC from a used ranger with less then 100,000kms. Even if it is the TC it is practically the same amount of work replacing them both.
My dad thinks it might be cold fluid...but...I dunno, even after I was driving awhile it was still in a bad way.
So my questions:
1. What do you think the problem is?
2. If I buy a used tranny and torque converter is it alright if I use the used torque converter or would it be best to get a new one?
3: If so...which ones are best? Stall etc etc. I do not know much about torque converters
4: I eventually plan on getting a CVB valvebody (might as well make this new transmission the best it can be because I have proper gearing now)... would it be best to put it on right away or is after fine as well? I figure if I put it on after I can let the used tranny get all lubed up and maybe filter any junk out and then put a new valvebody on? I'm probably just over thinking things, I just don't want gunk build up. I want to take care of this new transmission.
5. I plan on using a 5R55E from a newer ranger. I have done some research and it appears it is a bolt in swap and you just don't use the wires that overdrive first gear creating the "5th" gear. Anyone have any input/advice on this?
6. I know unrelated but since I would be disconnecting the transfer case in this and I have a bad u-joint in my front driveshaft...are they the same u-joints as the axles? D35. I have an extra spicer 5-760x sitting around
If you have made it through all this text I truly thank you for reading it and taking to time to help me in any way possible
