I have been thinking about taking a five hour trip to Tennessee this week and all the local car rental places near me are out of rental vehicles and I didn't have time to get my Ranger in to a mechanic to have it thoroughly checked over and that is why that I wanted to rent a vehicle. Since I bought my Ranger new and I have been real good about getting the oil changed about every 5.000 miles and getting other items replaced when needed. I just want inputs on rather if it is worth it or should I just wait and have my Ranger thoroughly checked over by a mechanic before I do anything like that.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
You know the overall condition of your truck better than we do. How hard do you think about it before you get in the truck to go 30 minutes away? If engine is running decent and brakes and lights are good, check fluids, inspect the belt, check tire pressures and go have fun. Maybe toss some basic tools, jug of coolant and quart of oil behind the seat. Also, when checking tire pressures, don't forget the spare.

I agree, that's a pretty reliable setup, I wouldn't stress about it. I took my '97 on a 1800 mile road trip a year ago, which was 11 months after I got it on the road from technically being totaled...

Like Eric said, you know your truck and what needs attention and what doesn't. Do YOU feel it's been maintained well enough to make the trip?

What's the worst that could happen?
Do it.
Keep your eyes on the gauges and make regular stops along the way -- plus what the others have suggested.
If you're not in a hurry, take the blue roads.

I did a 2400 mile trip this summer in my ‘07, and it’s got 145k miles on it. If yours is running good and all maintenance is current, why not go?

Another vote for do it. I took my 97 with 190k miles ar the time to Southington off road park for the 20th anniversary trail ride 2 years ago, that was probably a700 mile round trip. 7 hours one way AND I wheeled it for 2 days. It has over 194k on it now and u would road trip it without hesitation.

My credo
it is easier to fix and understand than "her"
I would put radials on my b2 and drive it to Cali from Detroit.....well....I would put on the doors too.

And it's a POS with at least two popped valve seals.

With that oil change interval and running fairly smooth ... The engine should be fine.

Transmission shift good?

Why should I pay someone else to screw it up when I can screw it up myself for free?
You know your trucks condition by now better than anyone so go for it. I just got back from my 3rd 1400 mile round trip to Oregon in my 04 with 218K on it. I never worry about it at all any more. I also can't believe it's used just over a 1 quart of oil in 5K so it must have been well maintained in it's past life. Time for another 5K oil change now.
