After reading how the cables tend to break and the rod-actuated latches don't break, I'd like to swap my cable-actuated latch for a rod-actuated latch. I have read that a 1989 latch assembly is a direct retrofit. Do I need a new inside door handle if I change to a rod-actuated latch mechanism? I assume so. Figured I'd check before calling junkyards. Also, please comment if I'm better off ordering a new replacement mechanism versus getting the parts from a junkyard. Seems like if it's rod-actuated, buying used isn't an issue since rod-actuation seems like it wouldn't be prone to failure. Also, has anybody mapped out the steps in the process for re-installing the latch mechanism? After I removed mine and took off the cable, I then did a practice re-installation to see how skillful I would be attaching the rod from the outside door handle and the rod from the lock cylinder, and holy toledo it's a fiddly process. Has anybody mapped it out step by step, with pics? Seems like the order of reconnecting the rods is probably important.

I plan to do the same swap on my 1992 if I ever have a cable break. I bought all of the parts for the swap at a wrecking yard. 89/91 will work. You will need the latches, the rod from the inside handle to the latch. the rod for the lock knob is also different so you will need that too. The inside handle is different. You can buy new inside handles from LMC. I removed the lock cylinders when I was pulling the latches out at the wrecking yard because it makes that rod much easier to disconnect. The outside handle rod just falls out of the bushing in the handle when you remove the latch. I also removed the lower nut on the glass track to give me room to get the long rod the goes from the latch to the inside handle out.
