I've got a misfire when warming up, and sluggish when trying to accelerate. It will maintain a steady speed of 30 to 45 easily until I have to go up a hill. Then all kinds of backfiring and missing commences. I can't use the diagnostic port and the display under the speedometer doesn't work either.

Look close at the spark plug wire locations on the coil, I don't have a coil in front of me to tell but they're separated by sides so the pairs of cylinders (1&4 and 2&3) need to be paired correctly on the coil packs, if a couple are swapped it can make the engines run pretty bad from what I hear... The Ford coils are labeled but since the same coils are used on different engines without the same number of cylinders the aftermarket coils aren't marked... (the 5.0L and 2.3L/2.5L use the same coil packs, possibly the 4.6L too but I haven't had one for over a decade...)

I'll ohm out the coils tomorrow. The wires are in there correct positions because up until last week the truck ran great. I'll also pull the plugs see if any have fouled. Last Friday I thought I'd gotten some bad gas out of gas station and I cleared that problem with a new fuel filter seafoam and Heat followed by pumping the gas out of the tank. The fuel filter was completely clogged with rust, but I get no rust by pumping the tank out with the fuel pump collecting it where the fuel filter should be. I have not pulled apart the injectors to see if any are clogged.

You're doing the right thing. Sounds as though you got contaminated fuel. The '99 has a plastic fuel tank, right? Where did the rust come from, then? (Scratching my head)

I'll tell you I'm not a Sea Foam fan. Used it one time on others' recommendations as a fuel system cleaner in my '97 Escort wagon, and immediately after hitting the road the CEL came on and the engine began running rough. Bad sensor (I forget which now). Turned out others online had had similar problems come up with Sea Foam. Forget the mileage (was well under 100K), but the car had been well maintained since I bought it new.

Berryman B-12 Chemtool to me is a better choice. Potent stuff, but never had a problem with occasional use.

hmm, if the coils went bad that could do something, if it's sudden and you didn't do something like change plug wires that wouldn't do it...

Does it do it in any gear when getting to about that speed? Just trying to see if it is power related or engine speed related, could be something with the crank sensor, it's variable reluctance so it creates it's own voltage AND has an internal magnet, if you got lucky enough to pick up a random piece of metal on the tip of the crank sensor that wouldn't help things... the other go to is MAF cleaner and cleaning the MAF sensor, it lives on that little guy... but if you are having an issue with the OBD II port it could be a power or ground issue to the computer, they do dumb things losing either not being able to supply enough amps to do things like spark and injection...
