I have m5r1 and the rear seal broke and I took the old one out and got a new one but I can’t get it to go in
The pictures are of where the old seal was and the side and back of the new one
If anyone could tell me how to get it in I would appreciate it very much

The red part goes into the transmission, the black rubber part goes on the outside

You can't just push it in, you have to carefully tap it in with a hammer.

In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I’ve tried that and it still doesn’t go in
If it's the right seal, it will go in. They are extremely tight. It must go in straight. Tap a little on one side then the opposite side. Keep working back and forth, tapping on the part that sticks out the most, trying to keep it even until the flange is against the transmission. If you have a piece If pipe the same diameter as the metal part of the seal, you can use that and hit it with a hammer. That sometimes helps them go in better.

There are special tools for driving seals.but you probably don't want to buy them.

I believe it’s the right one AutoZone said it was and I even checked rockauto to make sure it went with the right transmission code, I’ll try and see if I can get it

I see you have an 89 with 2.9. Sure the store didn't get you a seal for the FM146? Try to look at the part for numbers. It's silly how often I've gotten parts IN THE WRONG BOX.

I’m pretty sure it looks just like the m5r1 coded one on rock auto

Assuming you have the correct seal I have used a length of pvc pipe with a cap on it to drive in seals before, you have to make sure that the diameter of the pipe contacts the metal rim of the seal and does not damage the rubber.

The parts stores like Advance Auto also have tool sets you can rent or buy to install seals and bearings.

If you don't have time to do it right will you have time to do it over?
I use a big socket as a driver but a piece of pipe would work, too. Make sure the drain hole in the boot faces down. I prefer seals with boots like that because they help keep dirt away from the inner seal surface.

I typically use a socket myself.

But I thought that the hole was a vent and placed it on top.

Sockets work great. But that seal is probably around a 2" diameter, at least. Noy many people have a 2" or larger socket. The PVC pipe idea is great and relatively inexpensive.

A seal driver set that I used at work recently was actually some kind of plastic and it was a high dollar SKF brand thing.

You can carefully drill a new drain hole in the bottom.
