I have always found I could do the work several times over for what they wanted, and even do it better.
If you have the place to work on it roll up your sleeves and dig in
Check pawn shops and rummage sales for tools of all sorts. You'll want torque wrenches, ridge reamers, just assorted things, you might run across them most anywhere. Others you can get from parts stores loaners
Catch Pick and Pay - bucket days and such if you can catch them
I picked up spare starters, alternators, all sorts of emissions gadgets for little of nothing
