GEM module swap

I have a defective GEM module and gauge cluster in a 1997 Ranger 4.0 with manual transmission. I have a junk 2003 Ranger 4.0 with automatic and good GEM and gauge cluster. If I try the 2003 GEM and cluster in the 1997, could it damage something?
Has this been done successfully? I have swapped GEM and gauge clusters on F150's, but I have always found a matching part number on ebay, but now I have a junk pickup to steal parts from. I used the coil pack from the 2003 on the 1997, and it worked fine.

I took the GEM modules out and the connectors are different, so this won't work.

Cluster will swap, 1996-2003 have same wiring and size/shape

GEM will not, as you have found, 1996/7 GEM should be OK, from vehicle with matching "options"

"multifunction" is the type of box, and should have matching Ford ID number, select it(last 2 digits are important)

Mazda B-series used the same GEMs
Engine size or transmission type didn't matter for GEM, it just controls cab electrics


Yes, "Multi-function switch" is also what the turn signal unit is called on Fords, in this application that is not what it means, lol
