gear grinding

my 95 is starting to grnd when i shift from 1st to 2nd and if i try to downshift from 4th.
does anyone know what i can do about this?

No one can help if you don't give a few more details.

Where in the pedal travel does the clutch release? Near the top of the stroke, or near the bottom of it? Does the clutch slip in high gear? Can you let the clutch out in first gear with the brakes fully applied, and not kill the engine? Is there a clutch fluid leak visible anywhere on the system? Do you have to refill the clutch reservoir?

You have a bad clutch, a bad clutch master, or a bad clutch slave. Those are pretty much the only possibilities from what you describe. More details can help to narrow it down.

ummm, no. all those you listed are possible as well, but so are bad synchronizers inside the transmission. before you go haywire testing all that stuff, start SIMPLE. Is the tranny fluid FULL?

Worn synchros sounds more likely to me. But a simple fluid change would probably help.

Does this happen more once it's warmed up?

i just put a new clutch in it along with new fluid

and yes it does seem to happen more as it warms up. and the faster i go before i shift out of 1st makes it happen alot more often.

Its the 1-2 syncro that is shot, mines the same way. When you shift from first to second, instead of going straight down to second, bring it down out of first, move it over in neutral a little, then back over and down into second. Mine doesnt grind if I shift it like that, or double clutch it.

i bought it with a bad clutch so i dont know

mine does that too here and there but only 1st-2nd and its most likely the syncros. if you bought it with a bad clutch who ever you bought it from probably had to SLAM it into gear with out it. what nathan said usually works for me, also i tweak it to the right just a nut hair before it goes in 2nd. i just hate the felling that goes up your arm when it grinds also i just changed the transmission fluid not too long ago, it didn't really have an effect on the grinding.
