driveline whine

99 ranger a/t whine coming from under truck. not sure if its t/c or differential. gets loud as i lighten up on gas pedal but dulls out when i let off. anyone got any ideas? new tires all the way around, 3.0 flex fuel 4x4

The camshaft synchronizer is know to whine when they need to be lubed or replaced. If it goes you loose the engine.

Does the noise seem to be at engine speed... or wheel speed?

wheel speed. starts at low speed and gets louder the faster i go. there is like a vibraion for a second or two when i lift off the gas

Look at the front of the driveshaft. Some rangers came with a goofy harmonic dampener on the driveshaft. They tend to fall apart and make all sorts of noise...

would there be play in the driveshaft? driveshaft seems to be tight.i had myson get under it and see if he could shake it to check if u-joints might be bad. which there was no play. also we thought 4wd might have been stuck in 4 low but it wasnt

i just had transfer case replaced last year in feb

Something could be low on lubricant. I would check all fluids.

One piece driveshaft or two? If it has the center support bearing... I would have a look at it.

If it was stuck in 4 lo... you would know it. Sure it isn't stuck in 4 hi? Did it go off road prior to noting the problem?

Might be time to get it set up on stands and get under and look around a bit.

If it's wheel speed... it might even be a wheel bearing.

I like to drive alongside buildings... with the windows down and listen to noises bouncing off the building. Like behind a strip mall with low traffic... might help you narrow it origin a bit too.

my dad had to replace a rear axle on his ranger i might have to ask him to ride with me and see if his sounded similar. we have seen wet area under bed in th area above front side of differential

had differential checked after work on fri and it was a little low. shop had to apply heat to get plug out. still have the roar at high speeds. had been trying to listen to change in sounds this weekend going through curves and it seems like the pitch changes when im taking curves to the right. could that mean passenger side bearing bad?

It very well could.

had the chance to jack the truck up today because of broken brake line @ the split junction above differential. when i tried to check up and down play i got the surprise of roughly 1/4 inch in and out on both axles. Normal or excessive? havent taken wheels off as of yet.

The axle will float in the CV joints... probably Normal
