1999 ranger that I bought two years ago to learn the DIY basics.

Turns over great, new battery, spark plugs and leads, cleaned the air flow sensor, but still have intermittent starting issues, maybe one time out of seven.

Some times cold start, some times running hot (like when I stop for gas and won't start after) Eventually does but not until a half dozen tries and a few looks from anyone around.

No issues with power when it's running so I don't think it's the fuel pump. Ran the question through Google AI and it suggested crankshaft position sensor.

Anyone else have this issue? Thanks in advance.

So...

I see you said 1999 truck... but you posted in the 2.8L forum.

Those two things don't jive. There was no 2.8L in 1999.

Once we know exactly what you have... I'll move this post to the correct forum and maybe we can offer some assistance.

But the next time it doesn't start... cold or hot... be prepared to install a spark tester to check for ignition.
