Bad idle

It's the engine, it acts like a vacuum leak but I smoked the system to show nothing. Mounts are good, I'm thinking something with the EGR system.
If you think there is something wrong with the EGR system, a quick way to determine this is to take a thin piece of aluminum like a pop can, flatten it out and make a temporary solid block off gasket and slip it inbetween the EGR to block it off. You will get a EGR code from this, but all the computer will do is retard the timing slightly while driving down the road. You probably won't even notice it. If it doesn't help your problem, then you know to look somewhere else.

What is the idle RPM actually at? Read with a scanner not the tach.
The idle will sit at 1500rpms often, then drop to 1000 with the ac on or dropping on it's own every now and then.
