85 ranger wont stay running without a jump box. Bad alternator or is the spaghetti charging system doesn’t like running off the 60A alt? Idle is abit high so i dont think output would be a issue if alt is fine.
has anyone bypassed? Thinking about rewiring charging system with internal regulator if possible. I do want to duraspark conversion and other things but id rather spend that time just swapping new motor/trans/ecu and custom building the truck. Frame is clean no rust and no structural damage.

The battery should keep it running for a bit even with a bad alternator. Unless the alternator killed the battery.

Best thing to do is get it tested. Id test both battery and alternator.

The jump in amps shouldnt affect anything.

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
Hard to troubleshoot without voltage readings.
What is;

battery voltage, engine off?
Battery voltage, engine running, after it has been running for 5 or 10 minutes?

I will have to test the rest voltage and running voltage. Havent done it yet but thought it was weird it would die as soon as i took off my jumppack. Didnt have a bettery connected figured the alt would be able to support it but it didnt.
i also looked at the charging system diagrams if the alt is no good im just going to replace with a 180A alt from autotech and bypass the external regulator, and rewire the charging system.

Also would it be worth to redo the charging system before or after the duraspark conversion? Or does it not matter? That is something i have planned

Its not good to run the alternator without a battery. That can, and probably did, **** up your alternator.

Its been done a lot in my experience just fine on newer vehicles. But im pretty sure alt has a 12v sense wire maybe and if its not seeing voltage alternator wont charge, i still need to multimeter and see but im working on the carb right now, my jump pack runs it just fine.
Even if alt ends up being bad which i probably doubt its a good excuse for me to put 180A alt on

Its fine and working i missed the charge wire being unplugged. Runs without battery now, and yes i will put a battery in it when i can haha. Either way i will probably upgrade to a 180A autotech with a internal regulator and create a article.
