Anyone know definitively where the chassis number is stamped on a Canadian 2007 Ford Ranger?

A buddy of mine recently went to register a home made trailer his buddy welded up for him, that my buddy built a tiny home on.

The state has somewhat recently made it a PITA/impossible to register a homemade trailer.. so when he was at town hall without a bill of sale or any sort of VIN and explaining to the clerk what the deal was with this trailer.. the clerk very slowly asked him "so is this a brand new home made trailer? Or is this just a modified trailer that you can't find the numbers on any more? Because if it's the latter... we can just assign it a new VIN and have you on your way"

Gotta love bureaucracy! . . . (NOT) . . . I had a similar thing happen once regarding a tree that I wanted removed because it was becoming hazardous. I called city hall, and they said it sounded like it was on my property and would be my problem and expense. Not sure why it occurred to me to say it at the time, but I said "It appears to also be partially on city property by about 1/3 the width of the tree trunk (or about 10 inches). Next day I came home from work and it was gone! No charge. . . . I guess you just gotta learn how to play the game!

I have ABSOLUTELY no problem with making people jump through hoops to register a homemade trailer. 90% of “homemade” trailers are actually stolen trailers. I’d much rather the slight inconvenience when I register a homemade trailer then allowing some scumbag trailer thief the ability to register my trailer in his name.

It can’t be much worse than NJ. When I built my homemade Ranger bed trailer I needed:
Title to the Ranger (either signed over to me or already in my name)
Receipts to all major parts used. (Steel, hitch, axle, wheels/tires, lights)
4 separate pics. (1 of each side.)
Weight ticket from a certified scale.
Notarized build sheet with parts, prices, and location of purchase.

I have ABSOLUTELY no problem with making people jump through hoops to register a homemade trailer. 90% of “homemade” trailers are actually stolen trailers. I’d much rather the slight inconvenience when I register a homemade trailer then allowing some scumbag trailer thief the ability to register my trailer in his name.

It can’t be much worse than NJ. When I built my homemade Ranger bed trailer I needed:
Title to the Ranger (either signed over to me or already in my name)
Receipts to all major parts used. (Steel, hitch, axle, wheels/tires, lights)
4 separate pics. (1 of each side.)
Weight ticket from a certified scale.
Notarized build sheet with parts, prices, and location of purchase.

My homemade trailer was built to fit on a retired U-Haul trailer axle with the spindles that were 6 inches higher than the axle. I used about a ton of 1 1/2x 1/8 inch angle iron left over on a roof on a big pool and spa warehouse and showroom, using a little 110/220 V harbor freight welder, while I had a bunged up right arm and shoulder.
Other than the axle all I bought for it was a tongue, a tongue jack, and a trailer wiring kit.
After a lot of rough days it finally began coming together and I applied for a trailer inspection and told them I had $150.00 in it

When the officer with the highway dept showed up I didn't even have my boots on, and while I was trying to get out there was the biggest bunch of banging around on my "New" trailer.

As i got closer saw he was squatted beside the trailer tongue hammering a new VIN onto the frame

I think that title's still in my console down near the bottom, but OK don't even use them :/

He told me in our conversation that even if those numbers were ground off they could still use an acid and read it

I can appreciate that. I'm not exactly sure the process anymore.


You and I live in two very different places though, I can understand having to jump through all the hoops down there.


Most places up here.. someone's probably more likely to be trampled by a moose than have someone jack their stuff.. and it seems the state knows that.

We don't title watercraft, don't title ATVs, don't title motorcycles under 300cc, and don't title trailers that weigh under 3k lbs. I have a feeling the state changed the laws on home made trailers for the reason of safety lol. Anytime a home made trailer would pop up on Craigslist or marketplace they wouldn't even look like they'd roll down the road without catching fire
