So, my green Ranger, the 2000 extended cab 4x4 4.0 auto, had an ABS problem. The ABS would trigger EVERY time the brake pedal was depressed. I replaced all of the wheel speed sensors (both fronts with new bearings because the front bearings were going) and the rear axle sensor. Problem persisted. Got mad and pulled the ABS pump fuse. Even with the pump fuse pulled, it would often do the ABS shudder the first time you hit the brakes after starting it then it would be fine. Drove it like that for awhile. When I started the 5.0 swap, I figured I might as well fix my ABS problem, so I got a junkyard ABS out of an Explorer. I had the lines off it for a few months. Hooked it all up and went to do the ABS bleed with Forscan, and it didn’t work.
Let me back up for a second. So when I connected Forscan I saw a “low voltage“ error code for the ABS and realized I forgot to put the fuse back in. Replaced the fuse and tried clearing the code, but it won’t clear, just keeps coming back. All the wires look fine and all the fuses look fine. Ran the diagnostic on the ABS and it comes back clean, no errors. Run the service bleed and it says the process was interrupted and doesn’t do anything. Tried another day after charging the battery (it was at 11.8v the first time) and at 12.5v I still got the persistent low voltage code and a failed bleed attempt like before. Also tried doing the bleed with the battery at 12.8v and no luck.
Got the ABS out of my 98 Explorer Eddie Bauer donor and was going to try swapping that in when I saw the wires for the pump appeared compromised. Then I thought to pull the pump from my original Ranger ABS since it worked and when I pulled it out, I found that the ABS modules are different part numbers (but both say for Ranger/Explorer). Looked at the one currently in the truck and the module part number matches my original Ranger one. So now I’m not sure what to do with this mess. Hopefully someone can shed some light. @holyford86 said he was going to get me some diagnostic information but I guess he’s been pretty busy. I just want to get this dumb thing fixed. Half tempted to just plumb past the ABS and forget about the stupid thing. Not sure if that will cause any problems though. If it was the old stuff with just rear ABS I’d just eliminate it but this 4wabs, I dunno if I’d be opening a can of worms.
