I do not know what your intended power needs are but I would feel very comfortable using an 87 Ranger with the following setup:
• stock rebuilt 2.9l with minimal overbore
• complete new cooling system
• 15" electric fan
• engine oil cooler
• Hypertech stage 1 PCM CHiP
• multi spark ignition
• K&N drop in air filter
• all synthetic fluids
Will further benefit from a free flow 2¼" exhaust, even more with a quality set of headers; I ran mine with this $imple setup for over 20 years ..)
