I'd run it, looks like it is still a pretty solid truck too.

I always wondered about that. Do billionaires really need insurance? :dunno:
Are they still legally required to get car insurance even though they have more money than the insurance company does? :dunno:

I just can't picture Jeff Bezos getting pulled over and pulling out his Geicko card...

My Lightning got T-Boned in 2013. Over $8000 to repair it. Progressive fixed it no problemo. Adjuster called me up one day, said "Robert, that is one beautiful Lightning. Don't worry, we aren't scrapping it. KBB is still north of $20,000 at this time. We'll get it fixed up good as new." The guy that hit me was an Air Force staff sargeant. So his insurance was government. They fought it for over a year, trying to say it was my fault. I was on an overpass with the right-of-way, he was at a STOP sign, and pulled out while I was directly in front of him. My fault? LMAO!!

But it's been fixed since November 2013, good as new, Can't tell. Got all new rear suspension, axle, springs, sway bar, end links. All nice and shiny. Still that way since I refuse to get it out of the garage unless it's a picture perfect day.

Anyone remember the Ranger that Ford built, using a Lightning engine for power? Also the entire Lightning drivetrain. I would surely love to have that thing. Ranger with a 380 h.p. supercharged 5.4! Gimme-gimme!

I think you need to be able to prove appon request that you have the "minimum coverage" set aside in an account specifically for if there is an accident. I would imagine if i was a millionaire it would just be easier to get insurance.

Today’s update: The adjuster looked at the truck and said it’s totaled. I told him I want to keep it, fix the mechanical parts so it runs, and do whatever I can with the cosmetic parts. He agreed and said in that case he won’t total it. Instead he’ll write up the estimate to be a couple hundred below the totaled value, and they’ll cut me a check that I can then use to fix or not fix whatever I want. He was actually pretty cool about it. In the end I got a check for just shy of $4500. It’s a solid screwing to be sure, but I don’t have to deal with a salvage title and I can get it back on the road as soon as the leaf spring bracket gets here. I’m calling it a win for now, and then I’ll decide it I want to mess with fixing the cab corner, the rocker panel, and the rear door.
Thanks again to everyone for your helpful (and sometimes humorous) comments. Now I’m off to find out if I can put an engine from an ‘03 Ranger into my ‘08 without having any ECU problems. I found one locally that has low mileage, but I’m concerned about whether the computer will like it for reasons mentioned in earlier comments.

Keep an eye on the rear axle, if it got hit hard enough to rip the brackets it very well could have tweaked something. Decent chance your wheel bearing will start hating you in the near future too.

It doesn’t take much to bend an axle...

Insurance companies will total out anything old because of what the body shops will charge to repair stuff. I took my Grand Marquis in for two estimates at body shops after I got sideswiped. One wanted 8000 and gave me an estimate. The other body shop, the guy came out and looked at it and started saying how it was "structural damage, that made the car unsafe". He verbally said "$10,000 plus".

I went out to Harry's u-pull-it in Hazelton, PA. I was able to find a set of color matched driver side doors, knocked out some of the dent in the rear wheelwell, and got it all back together (not great looking, but passable), for less than $200.

From what I can see, worst case scenario, you may need to get a shop to replace the spring hanger, new shocks, and maybe a new axle.
