thats where the different stalls in the torque converter come in. they are designed to put the engine in the powerband before it starts pulling. same with the 5 speed, you just give it a little more gas when you let out on the clutch.

Personally I think the "301" is a better engine than both of them, haha... I have a feeling that no one is going to agree on this... It's like Coke vs. Pepsi...

I've ran both and I like the 302 the best and if I was going to build and off road vehicle it would have a 302 in it. I spend more time between 3 and 5 grand so I want more top end power, but that is just my opinion. Better yet run a 351 windsor and have the best of both worlds.

The 302 is fine if your useing your truck like a mustang.

But i use mine like a truck, and like a tractor, and thats why i prefer the 300.

hmmm
you know, i think you have a certain model 300 and 302 in mind rusty.

i say that because i do...i am thinking early 90's trucks for comparo...

i use my truck as a truck...and occasionally track runs...no way i would have a 300 over my 302.

but, compared to a car 302 or reg 2bbl truck 302 from like late 70-early 80's (exluding later car ho and truck ho) i can see where you would think a 302 wont move 10 k with a 300. cause it wont.

an efi 302 is a lil different...90's run real good. the 90's truck i would put up with no worries...and that is what i was thinking for 10k trailer wt uphill.

my money is on the 302 to win in anything over 1/4 mile all things being equal...gears/ tranny /tire. with the caveat being the gears have to be 355 or lower. but otherwise stock factory configurations.

as for torque.....i have had psd's...and big blocks..i dont consider any oem ford gasser under 390 cubes worthy of towing as main use. pathetic. the 400 is its own deal. it has some awesome potential.

but eats fuel. just like a 460.

Thats a sweet rig you posted a link to.

To each there own, I know that 94 E150 i had with a 302 couldnt outpull a tricycle, it was fast once you got it up around 35+mph though.

Now, i know my buddy had a 90 ( believe, that body style) F150 with a 302/2wd auto. My other buddy had a 89 F150 2wd with a 300/5sp. Down the 1/4 mile both trucks were actually pretty close, hook a load on the them and the 300 really shines.

I guess for all intesive purposes we can call them pretty much even. Where the 300 lacks(anything resembling high performance, drag racing, and freeway crusing) the 302 makes up for it, but where the 302 (Sheer grunt, and durabilty) lacks the 300 makes up for it. Its just kinda whatever you need it for.

Fair enough?

On the other had....your right about the 400. I got one in my 78 1 ton and id put it against any stock 460, its got some mild work done but id say thats fair seeing as how it has 60 cubes less.

Dustin
