Notice how the 9 between the 6 and 5 is way out of line? That means the odometer has rolled at least once. But still, pretty decent condition barring the rust.

Also that # rotates every 100 miles correct?why would it being off center mean a rollover odometer?

If you look at a new odometer (they are all digital these days so you are not likely to find a new mechanical odo) they are all in line. It is a well known fact that they stay pretty well in line until you reach 99,999.9 miles. You can watch it roll over and they will not be in line. I have seen it first-hand several times.

I missed the fact that you did a CarFax on it. The only problem with CarFax is that they list the odo reading by whatever number was given to them. They cannot tell the difference between 90,000 and 290,000. Regardless of whether or not I am correct, that interior is in amazing shape. I am not in any way suggesting that you ditch it or that you got a bad deal.

I'm not sure I've seen a factory odometer that misaligned. That said... that interior doesn't say it has 170k on it.

I also think... but not positive... the ECM keeps inferred mileage. An old Star tester could probably see that value.

But again... not positive.

Is it too late for an additional 2 cents?
Great score and best of luck with it.
Fix what's wrong with the vehicle.
Address what's malignant (the controllable rust) in any way which halts it.
Make sure your daughter knows not to loan it out to people. With a truck, she'll find herself making friends.
Get her driving it for a while then fix what breaks / wears normally (suspension parts, steering leaks, possibly bearings etc.) before throwing custom wheels on it.

Her lifestyle may favor running a car over any truck (as many know) so get it more saleable than it is and 'be ready'.

Old odometers: None of the numeral in my '76 Ford E-150 (an E-100 really) odo were lined up. I assume it had been turned back by a gorilla with a bent ice pick.
As I'd drive it the entire row of misaligned numbers would collectively go through 1/6 of a turn then snap back.
