Do you guys think the explorer air intake tube and airbox is restrictive for a 420 hp motor?

My credo
In theory, theory and practice are the same. In practice, they are different.
I dunno. Does it suck itself flat during WOT?

How do you plan to make 400+ on that setup with the stock intake parts?
Do you hear that whistle sound?

That is Jody's Ranger sucking air thru a straw...

You are running double the stock hp that intake ductwork/filter was intended for, I could see that being a weak spot. I know Mustang guys like the Explorer manifolds, I suspect they are probably at about their top end for performance at that point if not a little less than ideal.

I would also like to know how you are making 400+ hp. I have the same explorer motor setup but with a cam and headers.

To know if the intake is restrictive, put in a vacuum gauge in the intake, if it can't get to 0 at WOT at a bunch of rpm then yes it is restrictive, otherwise I'd run it... If you put a vacuum gauge ahead of the throttle, if you get any vacuum (I'd say over 2" HG) then yes the intake is restrictive.

Since it's there already, run it and find out...

But I'm with them, how do you know it's 420hp if you just have a starter cal in it? Calculated horsepower doesn't always add up to what you think it should...

Guys.. come one now... This is not a stock engine. That explorer intake has been heavily ported. It will destroy most aftermarket intakes , Trickflow, Edelbrock, Ect...

Throttle body has been heavily ported. Flows the same as 75mm tb.

Twisted wedge heads have been heavily ported and milled to 58cc, .033 headgaskets. It's a very well planned out engine build.
Anderson cam..
The headers were even ported and gained an additional 152cfm.

But I talked to the shop and I have to run a 3 1/2 inside diameter intake piping.

I know there are lots here who condemn CAI's as being useless. I have them on all three of my Fords, and yes, I have cold air being supplied to them through either scoops on the hood over the filter, or ducting from the grill to the filter. Hell, the one on my Mustang came with a velocity stack that mounts in the grill and three inch ducting to the filter. My Lightning has two three inch ducts feeding the filter area. Ranger has ducting from the grill and two scoops over it on the hood. All three don't even get hot when out driving.

First thing I do when I buy a vehicle. Usually within the first week. Nope, have never had to remove and clean a MAF. Ranger has had that intake since early 2000.

I don't see a cold air intake in any of those pictures...

You're still not getting that engine to lay down 400rwhp. Even with ported 58cc heads, ported intake, and even larger headers than you have now. You better be planning on a HUGE cam and upgraded valve springs if you plan on getting anywhere near 400rwhp. Even with the TW heads, you'd have to have the larger valves, valve reliefs on the pistons, a HUGE cam, and THEN add a stroker kit or power adder.

Look on the Corral for dyno proven combos and you'll see.
