Looking for a better trans than the E40d that bolts to the 5.4. My dad had his rebuilt a year or so ago and it is slipping again. He hasn't pulled anything heavier than a Acura CL since the rebuild. Will a bigger/better transmission bolt up? If so which one. @adsm08 @19Walt93 @RonD

Unless I'm losing my mind, the E4OD is normally a reliable transmission (no personal experience, just thinking back). That seems really odd.

Thats what my research was leaning to. I don't know why it would fail so soon. Maybe a shitty rebuild job?

The E4OD was a good trans, and you need to stay with that because of the computer control needed for any solenoid type transmission

But Ford did upgrade it with the 4R100, heavier duty for larger diesel engines, but it was used for gas engines as well

These don't have detachable bell housings, but do use the same solenoid controls

Some updates here on valve bodys: https://www.jegs.com/InstallationInstructions/800/890/890-496500.pdf

Info on the swap from E4OD to 4R100: https://www.powerstrokenation.com/threads/e4od-to-upgraded-4r100-swap.479594/

But as said E4OD was never a bad transmission design, when any automatic is "rebuilt" with just soft parts like clutches, bands and seals then they will fail in 12 to 18 months
New pump(Ford only), new sprags(on-way clutches), and OD drum should also be done
These parts cost more money but trans needs to be disassembled to replace the clutches, so its just the cost of the extra parts to do it right the first time

The E4OD was the bigger trans, right? vs the 4R70W? And behind a 5.4 it should actually be a 4R100, correct?

If that's indeed the case, I'm curious if you can put a 5R110W from a V10 truck in it. That would be the next upgrade. I'm sure there would be a lot of tuning and programming involved to make it function correctly.

Yeah, I think more or less the C6 with OD.

Not sure when the switch was, dad's '04 F-250 has a 4R100 which is what I have heard most mod motors having.

The digicals would need alot of work, probably easier to go ZF.

I think it went:
AOD->AODE->4R70W
C6->E4OD->4R100W

I don't think it was called the EAOD behind the 5.4 was it?

I was thinking the 4R75E or 4R75W.

I've had both with a 4.6 and 5.4 and put a total of ~500,000 miles between the two with no issues.

They are pretty solid transmission in my experience. I did run a tuner on both trucks that changed some shift characteristics of the trans, but they ran great with just fluid and filter changes.

4R75 replaced the 4R70W in the 3v Era.

If you pull a lot of stuff, especially heavy stuff, often, then maybe the upgrade may be worth your while, although I would say that any upgraded trans you want to put in should probably be rebuilt as well. If you do not tow much, maybe you would not need to upgrade.

If you are going to rebuild a transmission, why not just rebuild what you have.

The best thing you could do would be to find a specialty transmission shop that knows what they are doing. Even if you have to drive a ways to get there, I would think it would be worth it. Most general mechanics today will not put the time and effort into a proper rebuild, and you end up right back where you started?

What is your mechanical expertise level? Would you be able to drop the trans yourself to take it somewhere?
