Veterans Day

Today is Veterans Day...
To all who have served, thankyou for your service, your dedication, and your sacrifices.
But let us never forget those who came before us, who fought for a free country, and that fought for the freedom that other countries around the world, now enjoy.
And let us never forget those who are now serving....to you I thank for continuing the traditions and actions that many of us, still here, experienced.
No matter our views on current events, we are all still Americans...we fought, bled, died, sacrificed, so that we have the freedom to have those differing points of view.
I stand and salute each and every one of you, past vets, present vets, and future vets.
And, let me add, we should never forget, we should honor, the families of all service men and women, who sacrificed, who did without, who supported their loved ones choice to serve.
They are just as much a part of Veterans Day as those who served.

Never have and never will "celebrate" vet's day with a "free meal" or a "Veterans Day Sale" Stupid to use a day of remembrance to sell refrigerators.
In past have usually gathered with some friends to grill, down some beers, and reminisce.
Can't even do that this year. Relegated to watching some old war flicks on TV and watching History Channel.

I can see your sentiment, but my dad always goes to grab a free burger or whatever for dinner. He see's it as payback for how all the soldiers were treated coming home from vietnam. He likes to support businesses that offer military discounts or other services to veterans. I won't argue alot of them use these things for sales simply for profits, but most of them honestly just want to show their gratitude to those who served.

I would wish that all these companies that give out "free burgers" and "10% discounts for vet's" instead, take that money and donate it/support the various veteran organizations that look after vets. Those that are homeless, or are carrying injuries and disabilities that will affect them and their families for the rest of their lives.
Our govt, regardless of who is in charge, tends to forget those who have served. The few million $ of free food would be better appreciated if put to a greater good. Hard to enjoy a free "vet burger" with almost 50,000 homeless vets in the US.

Korea vets were kinda like Vietnam vets when they came back, it wasn't a "real war" so the WWI/WWII guys (which was kind of everybody else) didn't give them them time of day like at a VFW or anything. After all it was Veterans of Foreign Wars, not Veterans of Foreign Police Actions...

Both my grandpop's served in WW l. One passed when I was young, and barely remember, and the other, who was from England, served in France, never talked about it.
Dad served in WW ll and Korea, but only talked sparingly, bits n pieces. I always got the impression that by talking about it, memories he had would surface, that he would have liked to forget.
I now wish I had pressed him a bit more to learn what he went through.
Even when I came home in 1970, he never asked my what I'd gone thru, nor would he talk any more about his experiences.
Not like he didn't care, more like he was scared of bringing up memories.

So many in Korea had a truly horrible experience there (Chosin in particular). I get frustrated by some of the people I knew that came back with a 'thank me for my service' attitude, but at least for us the attitude of society made that option exist. Definitely not the case a few decades earlier.
