I have a late model 351W out of a 96 F250. I am trying to get it up on the engine stand but I do not have any bolts that fit the back of the black. So far everything I have touched on that truck and the engine have been held in with metric bolts. So I am assuming the bell housing bolts are no different. I have no way of gauging the threads so does anyone know what size they are? Does anyone have any idea where I can locate that information? The dealership was no help by the way.

Rule of thumb I've followed is that everything that threads into the the block is SAE, everything else is metric. The threads into the block are 7/16"-14 while the bolts that hold the trans in are M12-1.75. Hope that helps, don't think Ford wanted to change all the block tooling over to metric.

Take the bell housing bolt with you to the hardware store, find a nut to fit it. Then get new bolts that are the same as the nuts. That's the way i wold do it. lol

Thanks for clearing that up. That makes snese to me.

If I had a bell housing bolt I would have done that. All I have is a core engine sitting on my garage floor.

Bellhousing to block bolts are 7/16NC thread. As for length, You will need bolts that will give you the deepest penetration into the holes to support the engine's weight.

Which transmission are you using? I used 2" bolts with my AOD onto a 302.

It's the bolts going thru the engine stand supports/spacers into the block is where the 3" length is coming from.

Yeah, I am only trying to get it on the stand for now. Hell, I still do not even know which Ranger I want to use.

I still have not had time to get to a hardwares tore yet. When I do I will try and get this thing cleaned up and figure out which direction I am going with it.

Well I just found some bolts that go against that rule I mentioned. The upper intake on an Explorer still uses SAE to mount to the lower. Good luck with that build, enjoy.

I thought for sure some 2.9 head bolts I had would work. I have used them for this purpose before On another engine. It is a little annoying that Ford used both SAE and metric on the same vehicle.

Well, another problem that shows up now and then is that Ford uses metric bolts for the pressure plate into the flywheel while a lot of aftermarket flywheels are still drilled SAE. I've got both series of thread chasers to check and make sure of just which series I'm dealing with.
