I have a 2000 Ranger with manual tranny and have always used Redline D4-ATF in place of Mercon ATF. Redline is harder to find in this area so I thought I'd try Mobil 1 ATF.
OMG! Mobil 1 ATF STINKS! and I mean that literally. I noticed the strong gear oil smell when I put it in the tranny but that's not the worst part. When driving down the road, the intense smell of gear oil comes into the cab. I can't believe they sell this crap. And to make it worse, I noticed shifting is harsher as well. I guess I'll order Redline and switch.
This is the new version of Mobil 1 ATF - Multi-vehicle.

i think your problem is that you're using ATF in a manual tranny

I'm not certain about a 2000, but for my 93 M5OD Mercon is the correct fluid. From the service manual:

Five-Speed Manual Overdrive Transmission (Ford Manual Transmission) Motorcraft MERCON° Multi-Purpose Automatic Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or -DDX (E4XZ-19582-B) or Equivalent

MERCON is an ATF. and Mobil 1 ATF is listed as a product that can be used in place of MERCON.

ive used the mobil 1 in the transfer case with no issues, currently i have pennzoil syncromesh fluid in the transmission.

Alot of newer manual transmissions use ATF.

And for Rangers they do specify ATF as the proper fluid.

SOME have claimed success using full synthetic 0W20 or 0W15 or some other ridiculously low viscosity engine oil. I haven't had any problems with the ATF, so I keep running it.

well that's crazy, you learn something new everyday i guess, i use gear oil in my manual tranny, it's an 88 tho.....i only ever heard of use ATF in t-cases

Yep Ford uses ATF in their manual transmissions. I used the Mobil 1 ATF in my M5OD-R1, but switched to Royal Purple Syncromax when I put my M5OD-R1HD in. So nice....but costs.

I'd say check for leaks if you smell stuff.
I've used it in the transfer cases of my Ranger and two Sport Tracs plus the manual tranny in my son's Mustang and never had a problem.

is the mobil 1, replacemt for mercon, mercon v compatible?

Atf

Yes, Mobil Atf Syn. is Mercon V compatible. Have it in my M50D, Can't tell any difference between it and factory fill.

Older Mobil 1 ATF is not Mercon V compatible, the newer stuff is. Check the back of the bottle to be sure, although the older stuff is probably all gone by now.

Ford states not to use any product that claims to be both MERCON/MERCON V compatible in their automatic trannys. I assume it does not matter with manuals. Meaning, if your Ford tranny requires MERCON V, don't use an ATF that claims to be both MERCON/MERCON V compatible.
