Anyone using Mobil 1 ATF?

Nope - the M50D's take ATF. Post back up after you change the fluid though. I'm thinking about putting synthetic in mine too because I'm having some weird shifting issues.

Thats what I thought, he must be using it in a different tranny. I'm still undecided though... I would like Royal Purple, but like I said its quite expensive. Maybe once I find out how much I need, I'll be able to justify the cost better.

its probably right around the price of synchromax up here then. I looked online, and it said the mtl was a gear oil. Is that safe to use in my truck?

Yes, it is.

They can also take MTL, ATF is too thin for the syncros, that's why you're having shifting problems.

ford didn't spec ATF because that's what the transmission needed, they specced ATF because that let them save money by stocking only one kind of fluid.

Hmm - that's a new one on me. My shifting issues aren't so much with the syncros though. If I'm shifting up through the gears, everything's peachy. If I try to downshift from 4th to 3rd, its as though the shifter is real sluggish - feels like I'm pushing it through peanut butter and it grinds sometimes. If I double clutch it, no problem. I just figured it was the shifter rails getting worn out and I'd live with it.

MTL isn't really a gear oil, it's the equivilent of Synchromesh (as is RP synchromax, ect) and it's more like a 5w30 motor oil IIRC. I've tried Redline MTL in my Dakota and didn't really like it and switched back to synchromesh. FWIW gear oil will destroy the tranny in my truck, so I don't think synchromesh and it's equivilents are closely related to gear oil if New Venture recomends synchromesh.

i run the mobil 1 atf in the transfer case and pennzoil syncromesh fluid in the trans. mine doesnt like to be downshifted between 5th and 4rth or 3rd and 2nd. i just tap the throttle while the clutch is pushed in between downshifts and it drops right in. goes up through the gears just fine.

The M5OD-R(x) will need up to 3 quarts of fluid. It won't take the whole 3 quarts, but max capcity is like 2.25~2.5 qts.
