Mobil 1 ATF - Product review

Yep Ford uses ATF in their manual transmissions. I used the Mobil 1 ATF in my M5OD-R1, but switched to Royal Purple Syncromax when I put my M5OD-R1HD in. So nice....but costs.
Does your tranny shift ok in the winter with Syncromax? I normally use Redline D4 ATF but tried the Redline MTL which is for manuals and the MTL was extremely hard to shift in the winter. I switched back to D4 ATF.

Ford states not to use any product that claims to be both MERCON/MERCON V compatible in their automatic trannys. I assume it does not matter with manuals. Meaning, if your Ford tranny requires MERCON V, don't use an ATF that claims to be both MERCON/MERCON V compatible.

That document is about 9 years old and out of date. When Mercon V first came out, it was a completely different fluid from regular Mercon and the two were not interchangable. Then Ford realized it was redundant to have two different fluids when they could just use one fluid for all transmissions, so they reformulated Mercon V to make it backwards-compatible with regular Mercon.

Regular Mercon is an obsolete spec that Ford no longer licenses or recognizes. Ford says Mercon V now completely supercedes regular Mercon.

Notice how this document says: This article supersedes TSB 01-15-7 (the document you posted) to update the vehicle application chart.

I noticed Ford now accepts dual purpose atf's. Thanks

While researching this I also found a blurb in owners manuals for newer ford vehicles. Some of these new auto trannys have a life-time fill which means don't drain and fill :annoyed: I read that and thought WTF?? LOL

Hey greenpus, you mentioned that you smell the fluid inside. Did you find a fix for that? I'm having a similar issue. I can hear pressure release then the smell. I was going to put some rev around the top plate where the shifter comes out. What did you do to take care of the problem?
