extended radius arm build up

I don't mean to jump in on your posts guys but I lifted my rig about 3 inches and I am going to squeeze another inch out of it with the washers under the coil trick. My question is why not use the stock cross member for the radius arm bushing just pulled back a foot or so on the frame? I already tried keeping it in the stock position and just using 2 " square tubing to drop it. I am not happy with it... caster is off already without the extra 1". I know it is a simple build for custom bushing mounts but why not the stock cross member????????

I'm guessing here and don't know enough to say if it matters but I think you would have to make a wedge shaped shim to correct the angle. The r.a. bushing mount is mounted on a sloped part of the frame compared to a foot or so back.

yea its the stock radius arm bracket it measured 11inch i wanted to try not to have to do anything with the trans crossmember. the angle looked good so now i have to get some DOM. but it has to wait a week or so to finish

can i get a close up pic of the ra bracket. how you mounted it. you used the stock bracket right?

looks good man!

yeah that does look good, nice flex on it too

so the arms turned out great i have the skyjacker 8 inch Ranger coils and the arms did not help any as in flex with ranger coils. But now i can easily get a 23inch coil in my explorer and that is what i was going for. So im hoping on ordering jeep coils then it will be all worth it .

ill get close up pics tomorrow but all i did was move the stock R.A bracket back just before the transmission crossmember. Then i just drilled the frame. Now to set the caster angle i measured the flattest surface on both beams before i put the explorer on the lift. I lifted the explorer removed the coils then set the suspension at ride height with screw jacks. I then cut the radius so the DOM would fit snug. I then put the tube with the threaded end in the bracket tighten the nut. I then set my caste angle by putting a screw jack right where i cut the factory radius arm and pushing it up untill the angle was what i had before i started the project. Once i had it tack welded i took the arm out finish welded and add gussets then put back together. Before i started i would have to pry down on the axle beam to get my 21 inch coil in now I have to use the screw jack to push up on the beam so i can put my clamps on the coil :D

well i may end up using my stock brackets then. i would like to go a bit further back though and replace the tranny mount.

that's what i'm gonna do.....i'd like to make a new tranny mount and go further back as well, but besides a sawzall and an angle grinder, i'm sans-metal working tools right now....i really need a cutoff saw and a welder, i could make things happen

i didnt want to make a tranny mount is why i put it where i did I think the arms will be long enough for what i need.:icon_thumby:
