well i did my duraspark last night and got everything wired up. i went to crank it, and it ran and idled, then all of a sudden shut off and i cant get it to crank again. i stuck a screwdriver down into the coil's wire to see if it was sparking and i didnt see anything, but when i put my voltmeter on it i saw a spike. i had to cut a few wires to get them out of the harness. they are going to the tranny for converter lockup and nuetral safety switch. also my brake lights are lit up when the key is in the on position.

heres the wires i cut, i was able to wire some of them back up in the rectangle gray plug so i could have reverse lights, the other wires im not sure where i need to route them

where does this plug into?

module mounting. i didnt have the harness between the module and disty so i hard wired it, all of the connections on this are right

heres how i have the coil wired up, im using the stock tfi coil
red with lt green into red on the coil
and green from disty into green wire on coil

i havent made my metering block yet, but i wouldnt think that would give me a no start scenario

also when it shut off and i couldnt get it cranked, thats when my brake lights started lighting up with the key on, and also the duraspark box was sorta hot, but no burnt smells. anybody got any ideas? please help this is my dd and i cant get to driving it

Being an 85, it has different wiring set-up then the 83/84. Best thing I can say is start over, doing one wire at a time. I dont know how hot the Durabox should get if it gets to hot, it can easliy be done for.

i followed the 85 wiring diagram. at the time when i had it running i didnt have the duraspark box grounded, someone told me that would overheat it, that i needed to try a new box

so what can i check as far as my brake lights being on when the key is in the on position?

Your brake light wire might have been ran along an edge, partially stripped and could be grounding somewhere. If you want a quick fix just cut the wire and route a new wire to the brakelights with a cheesy switch actuated directly off the pedal.

Wow did you first off remove the computer harness leaving all the wires you cut at the 8 wire connector buy the coil long enough to splice. I have no idea how you got the brake lights crossed or whatever you did but the O/D lock out and and computer power wires are the only ones that needed to be cut at the 8 wire connector. The oil pressure, water temp and alternator wires do not get cut. The second color schematic explains how to wire the duraspark you have the three wires from the dizzy to the module color to color the black is the ground for the module. Power for the coil and module use the power wire for the computer red/ltgrn from the 8 wire connector. The green from the module goes to the neg on the coil. The two wire plug red/ltblu goes to the white on the module everything else you are gonna want to reconnect. To check for spark put a plug in the wire to the dizzy from the coil and set it on a good ground then crank the motor over you should get spark.

ok i figured out the brake light deal, i had accidentally wired in the green wire i cut in the 2 wire plug, so i got that straightened out. also replaced the module, so thats brand new too, but im not getting spark. i have all the connections correct, and all the wires to my alt and guages are still hooked up. the only wires i cut was one on the starter relay(hot with ignition on, small wire) and the ones for the trans sensors, but i can still wire up those. also it turns over but doesnt start. im thinking when i burnt the first module up, i messed up the coil. any sugestions? when i replaced the module it ran for a second but when i let off to let it idle it shut off, but sounded like it was flooded from all those times cranking. i pulled the plugs and they where soaked from gas. i dunno what to do, i gotta get this thing running. im thinking about going to summit and buying one of their brand coils with resister

put a plugin the coil wire set it on ground turn the key on and touch a jumper from ground to neg on the coil the plug should fire brite blu. just touch it dont hold it there

I did it, and still no spark, checked the ohms of my coil and it was .3 ohms and 8k...so i guess my coils bad, plus the ohms where fluctuating a good bit.
