Ok folks, I searched the Tech Library hi and lo and either what Im seeking isnt there or Im blind. I need two questions answered ASAP, as Im planning a trip to the U Pull It Yard after a scouting mission yesterday.

Vehicle under construction is 1992 Ranger Ext cab 2whd.

1) What year Explorer tilt steering column will bolt right up without needing mods ? Also, when did Ford start using the " pass key " chipped keys ? I need to make sure I find out the location of the brain and grab it if needed when I pull the column. The local Audio/Alarm shop says 1997 and up ??

2) Will the power bucket seats from an early to mid 90's Explorer also bolt right in ? There are three to choose from, what would you pick ?

1) Cloth covered power buckets in very good condition

2) Eddie Bauer leather, but will need to be redone and some of the side bolsters look different

3) Explorer Limited Edition Leather, also needs to be recovered, but again, like the Eddie Bauer model, the shape and contour of the buckets and bolsters look different and the head rests articulate and go up and down.

I've given up looking for Mustang or Turbo TBird Coupe seats.

Any input is greatly appreciated

dont know anything about the colom, but i would think 2nd gen ranger/early explorer are very simular,i would go with the cloth seats as the leather ones would be expensive to fix/recover.

I am not 100% sure, but 99% sure the 91-94 Explorer should work for a steering column. You won't need to worry about the chipped key, they didn't have one. And I believe 97 and up is accurate, my 96 has a regular key.

The Explorer seat will work, but I think you would lose the power option because need to use the Ranger tracks still. From what I understand the Ranger tracks bolt right on to any Explorer seat.

And for my vote, I'd go leather and heated if you find some. I think you would be better off to find some out of a sport if you have a supercab. The ones I almost got slid up for passengers to get in the back seat like my Ranger.

I should have added that I would be recovering the seats regardless to get the color I want. I would NOT be doing leather redo, cloth. I mentioned the leather on the two different seat styles as a frame of reference only so people would know what model I was talking about. The big attraction for the Eddie Bauer or Explorer Limited seats is the bolsters and bucket shape/size, not the leather.

The other option, the exisiting cloth covered buckets are in MUCH better shape and close enough to my choosen interior color that I can get away with putting them in immediately and waiting till later to get them redone, but they dont have as "cool" a shape or the nicer/higher bolsters.

You should be able to use a 93-97 ranger 4x4 steering column in your truck. These came in tilt and had standard keys. I am pretty sure the firewalls are the same since I have used 90-92 stuff on my 93 and everything has been identical.

A good idea to make sure you don't buy the wrong parts or waste time pulling stuff that wont work would be to take pics and some measurements of your stuff along with you to the yard. Most u-pulls no longer allow any parts into the yard but pictures and notes are perfectly fine.

on the seats if ur have a ext cab ranger the seats from a explorer will bolt right up. even the tracks from a explorer will work in a ex cab ranger, but not a regular cab. as far as igition systems goes the pats system wasn't used till 98 and up to my knowledge. i would safe to say that for as colums go u should be able to use any ranger colum from 89-94 in 95 they changed the colum and dash, explorer anything from 90-94. 95 and newer stuff i would be afraid to say it would work as i have no idea never delt with any of that. get the seats u like the best cause ur butt is the one that is gonna be sitting in them.

1991-94

Much later than any column than will fit your truck

you don't actually want electric buckets because of several factors, they aren't capable of moving as far tforward or back as the manual tracks, they are adjustable in other directions but you can accomplish the same effect with longer bolts and spacers, once you get an electric seat adjusted perfectly something always bumps the controls and screws it up...

1) Cloth covered power buckets in very good condition

2) Eddie Bauer leather, but will need to be redone and some of the side bolsters look different

If they need to be recovered move on, lether sounds "Sexy" and smells nice but in hot and cold weather it feels just as uncomfortable as vinyl

3) Explorer Limited Edition Leather, also needs to be recovered, but again, like the Eddie Bauer model, the shape and contour of the buckets and bolsters look different and the head rests articulate and go up and down.

want a simple answer? 1990-93 Explorer sport buckets bolted to your exsisting seat tracks.

You should be able to use a 93-97 ranger 4x4 steering column in your truck. These came in tilt and had standard keys. I am pretty sure the firewalls are the same since I have used 90-92 stuff on my 93 and everything has been identical.

95-97 use the "new style" column common to 1998-up and the firewall is completely different

on the seats if ur have a ext cab ranger the seats from a explorer will bolt right up. even the tracks from a explorer will work in a ex cab ranger, but not a regular cab. as far as igition systems goes the pats system wasn't used till 98 and up to my knowledge. i would safe to say that for as colums go u should be able to use any ranger colum from 89-94 in 95 they changed the colum and dash, explorer anything from 90-94. 95 and newer stuff i would be afraid to say it would work as i have no idea never delt with any of that. get the seats u like the best cause ur butt is the one that is gonna be sitting in them.

The explorer SPORT seats have the "double slider tracks and the seat back latch mechanism to actuate it,and the "sport" seat tracks (1991-93, not sure about 1994 because there are floor pan differences) aRE a bolt in to most gen1 gen2 supercabs.

Your 1992 supercab MAy have the extra brace bar in the floor, so generally it's safer to say your exsisting tracks will fit the later seat than it is to say that other tracks will fit your floor.

I had tilt steering in my 88 Ranger...so if you have that as an option you could actually use the trim that goes with it...I happen to have the trim for tilt steering still...and looking for the trim for the non-tilt...they are about two inches shorter on the tilt version...so you may actually be able to cut the longer version that you already have...not sure if everything lines up though...but I've put the shorter version on my column and it fit up to where it ended...
