what parts needed for manual hub swap

hey guys my new 94 ranger has auto hubs, but my uncle has a parts truck up there, same year with d35 and manual hubs, he told me i can take them. so what parts will i need? and what tools will i need to bring up? just a selection of sockets/ratchets and a spindle nut socket? thanks
i know ill need the spindle nut itself, but is that it? (aside from hubs lol)

There is a little piece that locks the spindle nut, a magnet would probably be best to remove it. I didn't know when I did my first one and broke the spindle nut while removing, no biggie if your not reusing it. Also need a hex socket/ spindle nut tool, 6 sided for the auto hub nut, 2 3/8" IIRC. 4 prong spindle nut socket and then the rest of the tools you probably already have.

yea but i mean just to remove the manual hubs from the truck, i know how to remove the parts just not sure which parts to take? ill worry about removing the auto one later lol

I just swapped them on my truck and all I did was remove and replace. It was over a week ago so memory is gone, but I think I took the spindle nuts and in between, that's it Just take as much as you can, you'll use it eventually

ahha thanks ill just get whatever i can see lol, im thinking just spindle nuts and washers, if its the same as a D28 i can have the parts off in no time.
ill take a look at the conversion kits online, seee what they come with

when you pull the manual hub off, youll see a c-clip, splined washer, outer nut, a washer with holes in it, and the inner nut. grab those things and you should be set.

as far as tools go, youll need the spindle nut socket, a break bar, a screw driver (to remove the c-clip). be careful when removing the c-clip, then tend to fly off in any direction.

something to keep in mind on these little keyways...

Usually the spindle nut is up against them so you will not be able to get them out with a magnet or a small pick tool (what I used). you will have to use your 2 3/8 rounded hex socket and loosen or tighten the hex nut to get the pressure off the keyway. then it should come right out with little or no effort.

The key comes out horribly! I used an old high strength speaker magnet with a punch stuck to it and it pulled it out because a normal magnet would move it. The page in the tech library says you can push them through with a punch and it wont hurt a thing. And before you put the manual hubs on take them apart, clean, and re-grease them, the used ones I got were filled with metal shavings!
Oh and if you don't have the right socket, a punch or chisel will do just fine taking out the old nuts.

if youre referring to the spindle nuts, do NOT use a punch or chisel. you will damage the nut. if youre going to do it, invest in the proper tool, theyre cheap and you WILL use it more than you think.

like i said before i already got the socket, and back last year when i had my b2 i used the chisel all the time for the spindle nuts but i had to buy the sock for my 79 and its the same for the d35 too. next monday probably i will bring my truck up there and swap hubs

for the auto hubs all you need is a magnet and a pair of channel lock pliers at most to get the nut off (after the C clip and washer that is), it SHOULDN'T be much more than finger tight, channel lock pliers are good enough for the job.
