What oil do you use?

man i keep trying to convince myself to use synthetic but i know its either going to leak or i'm not going to be able to even tell a difference. I read around online that switching from conventional to synthetic it could leak a little at first but then would tighten back up or not even leak at all....seems like the overall consensus is that switching isn't that big of a deal.

there are some things that should be done before switching, but it really isnt a big deal.

ONE time, again ONE time, in high school i put a synthetic oil in my B2 after using regular old pennzoil ever since i could remember. the next day on the way to school, boom oil pump dies and i almost blew up my engine. maybe it was just a coincidence and the pump would have gone out no matter what oil i'd put in there. now i just put regular ass 10w30 pennzoil and change it every 3-4000 miles. no problems since

im going to mark that up as coincidence.

Switching is not a big deal at all. The only time old engines leak is if the seals are bad to begin with, synthetic can make the leak a little worse. I switched 2 of my cars with over 130k and they both haven't started leaking at all. I really don't understand why people are so scared to use synthetic.

Like what? You don't have to do anything before switching, just dump it in and go.

+1 me too.

not really the best idea to just dump it in and go. Especially if you are trying to get your moneys worth with a High quality oil.

on a newer car or engine that has just had the conventional oil in for break in, really all it needs is this:

for an older vehicle with some miles I would recommend both that above product, and this:

IF your vehicle uses/leaks NO oil, Synthetic is great.

After my rebuild I used Mobile 5w30, however it was just not economical, my truck leaks/burns about 1/2 quart every 400 miles. So I use Pennzoil Yellow bottle.

I try to stick with Valvoline, but I've bought Mobil 1 and Castrol when it was on sale. The oil filter is always a Purolator or Motorcraft depending on which is on sale.

I just spent the extra for Mobil 1 10w-30 and a Napa oil filter on my 90' 2.3 with 200,xxx?300,xxx? or 400,xxx? I just hope it works out

Just use whatever name brand dino is on sale. Have 2 cases of 5w30 (Phillips 66 Tropartic/ Chevron Supreme) Both were < $2 per quart. On the 5w20 side, Quaker State ($1.48 qt.) and just picked up a case of Wolfs Head for $1 qt.) Stick religiously to 3K OCI's and never had an issue.

I am running AMSOIL in my engine. I have not got around to doing it to my trans and diff yet though.

same thing for me .I think do change to Amsoil synthec and never change it for the rest of life of the truck.I know a person who changes the oil exceeded 40k and is alway nice one.

I use Castrol EDGE full-syn and I have been quite happy with it, and I run a K&N oil filter with it on my OHC TwinSpark 2.3L

I worked as a temp for a windsheild wholsaler in Manch, NH with a fleet of 5 Chevy 2500's running Amsoil. The trucks were in use every day delivering auto glass across New England, 5-6 days a week, about 500 miles per truck per day.

One truck was a '03 with OVER 250,000 miles on it. The boss usually changed the oil every 25,000 miles or so. The trucks never had an issue.

curious to know if you noticed any difference's in driveing with synthetic over conventional or is it really the same?

Synthetic doesn't thicken up as much in the cold weather, so they start easier in the winter. When I was using Supertech syn in the Explorer, I didn't notice much difference. About 2 weeks ago I switched to Napa brand syn and it feels much smoother when accelerating. When I switched the Ranger, I thought it revved up slightly easier, but that could have been placebo effect. The difference in the Explorer was definitely very noticeable though. I haven't noticed much difference in my 92 Accord except for the easier starting.
Since each vehicle only gets driven about 5k a year, I simply change oil once a year. I use a time-based schedule instead of a mileage-based one. I know the syn oil can go that far easily, and in case I beat on my engines occasionally, I know they're well protected. I use it mostly for peace of mind.

peace of mind and hopefully some better protection and longevity is what i'm going for, i know i probably won't see a huge difference but at least i'll feel better
