thinking about getting pillar gauge pods for my 02 ranger. so far i have found a double pod, i was planning on getting an air/fuel mix gauge and coolant temp. any one got pics of pods installed or know were i could find a triple gauge pod? thanks

I don't think a triple exists, unless you make it.

A/F is going to be kinda boring on an EFI. It's going to switch lean-rich-lean-rich-lean-rich like a metronome.

I'd suggest a vacuum gauge. Or a voltmeter (you can hook it up to the HEGO sensor when you really want to know the A/F mixture). Or perhaps oil pressure.

im afraid that would be equally as boring as an A/F guage. anything that uses the factory narrow band O2 sensor is just going to rapidly switch back and forth between high and low. if you really wanted an idea of your A/F mixture, you'd have to plumb in a wideband...but on a stock vehicle...thats a good waste of several hundred bucks.

i concure on the vacuum guage though. not only is it the most "active" gauge, but its useful for fine tuning your driving for best fuel economy. oil pressure is nice to have...but the stock idiot guage is better than nothing. if youve got an auto, id get a trans temp guage.

i have a "universal" triple pod in my 03 ranger, and it sucks, it doesnt conform to the piller...(have volt, A/F (gonna supercharge, but still gonna be boring as they all said, and a vac/boost).....there is a huge gap on the windsheild side because its not made for a truck design, soo i would get the double..cause it will fit perfectly....which is what im gonna do down the road to get a cleaner look, and put one of the gauges by the shifter.

ok thanks im planning on super charging in a year, but i dont think i could handle a gauge flipping back and forth that would drive me nuts. the description for the gauge did say something about it connects directly to your narrow oxygen sensor.

guess ill go with a water temp for sure, but what can i get out of a vacuum gauge.

if you guys had to pick two guages from these choices what would they be; a/f, water temp, oil press, volt, vacuum, and trans temp, but that would be pointless with a manual.

thanks

if your going to supercharger, def put in the vac/boost combo gauge...i think you asked what you can get out of a vacuum gauge? like benefits? if thats soo, it monitors your right foot..the higher the vacuum, your throttle body position is good...if you have it at 0, then your TB is basically open all the way...and there is no vacuum force...

so i hear

0-9 power
10-18 economy
19-22 idle

thats just what i hear is a good reference.

and out of those choices i would pick oil pressure i think...(and the vac/boost gauge)

also depends where you are going to put them...and the configuration your going to put them in...when i go to a 2 gauge pod on the piller, im going to put my volt meter by the shifter, along with a ameter, and oil pres probably.

oil pressure and vac/boost.

and i ALWAYS reccomend mechanical guages. resist the temptation of electronic guages...they may be more convenient, but are less accurate and less reliable.

im glad you said that electrical gauges are twice as expensive lol. so oil pressure rather than water temp huh.

thats what id run. the factory oil pressure guage is useless...whereas the factory temp guage does give you SOME clue what the temp is actually doing (an aftermarket guage would be a thousand times better though).

could there be any issues with a mechanical vac gauge having the hose pinched by instaling it in the a pillar

there should be plenty of room for a vacuum line in there. you might have to drill a hole and run it under the factory pillar trim, rather than between the piller pod and trim. i KNOW theres enough room under the factory trim, ive got my CB antenna cable running under there and its no smaller than a 1/4" vacuum line.

well i think im going to start out with a vac and water temp gauge in a double pod and then maybe get another double pod later with a oil pressure and voltage. here's a pic of the pod, hopefully i can fit 2 on the pillar

I installed a single gauge pod for my vacuum gauge. Now I think I'll get a dual pod where I can install a mechanical oil pressure and an electrical water temp gauge. Could also install on the passenger A-pillar. No problem seeing that far, in a Ranger.

I can't believe that new dashes are so user-unfriendly for the DIYers. Can't even find a decent place to install a toggle switch, for petes sake!
