Featured Build Threads

Obviously I'm a bit out of date on the euro stuff. It was out of my price range before all this stuff started. I'd still risk an early 80s 5- or 6- series BMW if I ever saw one about to be crushed.

They're older examples, but hot-v turbos and starters in the V (was that Northstar?) were clues the engineers were bored.
From somebody that has f-ed around with bmw, if you can't afford a new bmw, you absolutely cannot afford an old BMW

Oh, for the days of purely mechanical diesels.

They are a PITA as well.

We had to pull the pump off and get it rebuilt when we got our combine. It started and ran on ether so we thought the engine was decent but it was a 11k lb brick with the rack stuck in the injection pump.

Engine sits sideways like FWD (actually I guess it is FWD lol), pump is of course close to the bottom on the back side so a guy has to lay across the top of the engine to remove/install.

Lots of fun... pump rebuild cost 2x what we paid for the combine. :black_eye:

Oh, no. Is that what's in my moms Flex?

Every 3.5/3.7 is like that.

You don't hear about it in trucks because you don't have to disassemble the entire vehicle like you do if it is FWD.

JD went to that gear drive BS in the 466's in the 80's. Not a bad job to replace... if it doesn't dump coolant into the crankcase and wipe out the bottom end before you notice you have a problem.

Don't forget the FWD 3.5/3.7 Fords where the water pump is driven by the timing chain. My wife and I love her edge, but that water pump is one thing i don't like. I have another year of extended warranty on it
Not as bad as the stupidity of a belt driven oil pump

Wet belt. Cause we have 100 years of experience with rubber belts running in oil right? 😆

Thing you gotta remember is the gear pumps were way too big and kept failing. Oh wait... 🙄

Edit: not to derail the thread, but for you engineering guys there's a great story on YouTube about a plastic bridge failing (upon installation, where the original bridge lasted 100 years and the temporary wooden bridge is 4 years old and going strong) in Maine, my home state, designed by my alma mater. The thing about progress is, you need progress, because progress.

actually the RWD base 3.5/3.7 use an external water pump with just an 'idler' pulley where the internal one would go

Back to the op and the original post - Ford already has some of that going on. On any of the current generation of F-150 that has BLIS (virtually all of them) the radar sensor is in the taillight assembly. That means that if you need to replace the taillight assembly, you must have the dealer program in the VIN of the vehicle, because the CANBUS requires that in order to communicate with it.

The days of going to the jy to get a part to fix your own vehicle are rapidly drawing to a close....

only if the radar sensor is replaced, that does not come with the tail light and that swaps right over

That’s just it, the auto makers don’t want us fixing our own vehicles, they want us buying an overpriced plastic surveillance bubble every 3-5 years

I agree, I’ll buy a horse before I submit to that
If i could go to a dealer, doesn't have to be Ford, and buy a truck with crank windows, manual locks and a stick with no options the F150 would be gone. Don't get me wrong the tech'y stuff is cool, but just more crap to go wrong and when it does fail its $$$. Like the sealed LED headlight housings on the F150

I don’t mind power windows too much, after being caught in a couple storms with the windows down in a full size and trying to get across the seat to wind it up…. Lol
