I’m hearing a grinding sound when I let off the gas in below third gear. I recently put about 500 miles on her, but only started hearing this in the last 10-15 miles. Any ideas? ‘93 4.0 V6 with the 5 speed and 189k on the dash

Check your Ujoints first.

Then drain your trans fluid and check for shavings

^-- +1.

If you don't find answers there then look at the lash and mesh pattern in the rear diff. The mesh being off and cause noise on deceleration. This is not the first spot to look but will give a direction to go after/if the other things check out good.

Also make sure the trans fill plug comes out before draining the trans, Just a tip to help save time and aggravation.

My '90 made horrid noises in all but 4th and still wasn't great in 4th before I rebuilt it, turned out it was the taper bearing inner race on the output shaft had turned into a file...

But I'm with the others, the lower the gear the more torque there is on the rear driveline, could be a pinion bearing or something, nothing is standing out super bad in the transmission unless it's the front countershaft bearing somehow...
