what failed?Bit scary. Happened when I was going 75 on the interstate. 5 hours into a 7 hour drive for my summer work.
Wheel hub and CV axle. I think the cv axle went first, but I don’t have much of an idea. With how twisted the splines were, the parts store guy they must’ve been messed up for a while.what failed?

I’m thinking along the same lines as you. I’m actually in college to be an engineer but haven’t taken any classes that pertain to this. It’s about all the way fixed. Needs a brake caliper and pads, but good enough to drive the few miles to work and back.I doubt that. That kind of deformation takes an abrupt shock. It was hard enough to twist, but not enough to snap it. I would have expected the bearing, but that twist makes it look like the shaft suddenlt stopped spinning. If it had been the hub and the wheel locked up, I would have expected the twist to be in the other direction. Seems strange that the CV joint would have done that much damage though.
Just what my brain is telling me, but I'm no engineer. I'm playing armchair detective, it's fixed (or getting there) and everyone is safe is all that matters.
Thanks, I try. I still haven’t gotten around to paint correcting though, as (shocker) 20 year old trucks are full of swirls and small scrapes. I also need to have a dent in the tailgate pulled.I'm not sure about that. Yours looks pretty nice.
Had to replace the wheel hub and cv axle. The big cut on the axle is due to having to cut the hub off.
Drives just fine. Splines on the front diff look perfect. Shifts into 4x4, but I haven’t tested it. Wheel was locked up, but fixed nowThats a very impressive failure! How does the front diff look? Did you explode the case? Is it locked up?
Thank you! 3 coats of por15 (1 being the UV top coat) - still considering undercoating the whole truck with fluid film in the final assembly but weary of the tacky consistency since it doesn't set up or harden. Anybody have experience with fluid film?
