What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

what failed?
Wheel hub and CV axle. I think the cv axle went first, but I don’t have much of an idea. With how twisted the splines were, the parts store guy they must’ve been messed up for a while.

I doubt that. That kind of deformation takes an abrupt shock. It was hard enough to twist, but not enough to snap it. I would have expected the bearing, but that twist makes it look like the shaft suddenlt stopped spinning. If it had been the hub and the wheel locked up, I would have expected the twist to be in the other direction. Seems strange that the CV joint would have done that much damage though.

Just what my brain is telling me, but I'm no engineer. I'm playing armchair detective, it's fixed (or getting there) and everyone is safe is all that matters.

Met a guy from the NW facebook group that is working on extended radius arms and sold him my take off's for cheap since I'm doing the same thing so now those won't be in my way :)

Then got gas and the '97 showed 25mpg for that tank, last was like 23.4 so it's not doing too bad.

I’m thinking along the same lines as you. I’m actually in college to be an engineer but haven’t taken any classes that pertain to this. It’s about all the way fixed. Needs a brake caliper and pads, but good enough to drive the few miles to work and back.

I'm not sure about that. Yours looks pretty nice.
Thanks, I try. I still haven’t gotten around to paint correcting though, as (shocker) 20 year old trucks are full of swirls and small scrapes. I also need to have a dent in the tailgate pulled.

Also pro tip, the BEST thing to clean a soft tonneau cover is convertible top cleaner. The stuff smells, but man does it work well

Had to replace the wheel hub and cv axle. The big cut on the axle is due to having to cut the hub off.

Thats a very impressive failure! How does the front diff look? Did you explode the case? Is it locked up?

Drives just fine. Splines on the front diff look perfect. Shifts into 4x4, but I haven’t tested it. Wheel was locked up, but fixed now

Got my fuel tank hung. Waiting on fuel filler neck to set my bed

Thank you! 3 coats of por15 (1 being the UV top coat) - still considering undercoating the whole truck with fluid film in the final assembly but weary of the tacky consistency since it doesn't set up or harden. Anybody have experience with fluid film?

I put disabled vet plates on the ranger. Npw that she is my primary vehicle, she and the wife's wrangler get dv plates.

Yayy, i dont have to put money in a parking meter anymore!!! Ha ha ha

Fluid film is the bees knees. NHOU is pretty similar and what I had done on the bronco. I paid 325$ to have mine done last year.. reapplications are slightly cheaper.

There are a couple other products that sound better IMO.. just more expensive.. like 2 or 3x as expensive. Doesn't necessarily need annual touch-ups though which is super awesome.

I believe the name of one is waxoil? It gets sprayed on via a heated gun.. then once it cools it hardens up.. like wax.. so unlike the fluid products it won't get washed off in high road spray areas.
