Hello,

Both the pinned "How to build a 4.0l OHV for power" write up and the TECH pages suggest that using a Ford 4.0l SOHC oil pan (with it's built-in girdle) will offer a strength improvement to any 4.0l OHV engine.

Can any Ford SOHC 4.0l (Ranger, Sportrack, Exploerer, Mountaineer, Mustang) oil pan be used on any Ford OHV 4.0l (Ranger, Explorer, Aerostar, Navajo, B4000)?

As I understand it a small engine mount spacer/washer may be needed to raise the engine for pan clearance; I'm alright with that detail.

Well its kind of the same block

But in just asking I would say no way, lol

But if someone did it then I would say, OK and yes you would need to raise the engine up which runs you into other issues at the tunnel
Maybe 4.0l SOHC motor mounts added 3/4" to 1"

I would be more worried about the 160HP rated crank "flying out" than the block flexing, lol

RonD,

I am asking because it has been recommend on this site for as long as I can remember, I just never had the ohv 4.0l to put it on. Now that I have a 4.0l ohv, I want to purchase the right pieces (the SOHC uses a 2 piece oil pan).

If it is a bolt-on, why are you concerned about the 160hp rated 4.0 ohv crank not being secure?

Yes... maybe.

Any 4.0 SOHC pan will fit the OHV block, but will the Mustang SOHC pan fit the Ranger chassis... I can’t answer that question. I’ve never tried it.

Comment was meant about the 160HP rated crank in a higher HP engine, more than a flexing block

Then, will a 205hp rated SOHC 4.0l crank shaft will fit in a OHV 4.0l?

If there is a chance of fitting, I would only look at the style made to fit you style of truck. The profile may be different on the others and not fit at all.

I would look at the oil pump pick up as well since the SOHC pick up may be different from the OHV as far as profile and depth. Not to mention if it will even bolt up to the OHV block.

In regards to using a Ford 4.0l SOHC crankshaft in a Ford 4.0l ohv block, to put all thoughts in the correct direction, It does fit.

The issues are:
• 8 bolt output vs 6
• Woodruff keyed output vs not
• increased strength and reliability

That I am aware of.

Yes, I think the nose is different, to add balancer gear used in SOHC 4x4s
But if the 8 and 6 references the flywheel/flex plate attachment, then they are the same, OHV got the 8 hole in 1997, which was also the first year of the SOHC in Explorers
