What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Still making room for my new ranger project in the garage. Need enough room to be able to work on b2 as well.
...

Used the ‘07 to bring home a CL find- old welder, a 250A AC/DC Montgomery Wards PowrKraft (Century). Now I gotta remember how to make sparks again to build a NLA mower deck.

Got the ranger mostly back together. Decided to call it a night before I heard from the house “do you know what time it is?!” Yes, I do have a clock in the garage, and I know its not really a question. I still need to put fan back on, the fan shroud peice , air intake hose , upper radiator hose, belt and fill with coolant. I didnt have a gasket to go between therm housing & block and had to make one. old thermostat was indeed a 192, even though I ordered a 195 I saw the new one says 192. Oh well, one issue I think iis now fixed is a removed restriction. Back when I first got the truck I tried putting a inline 120V coolant heater on it. Didnt go as planned and I removed it, where I cut the heater hose I had put a 90 degree pvc fitting in. So that might not be giving me good flow through the core, between the inside diameter of the fitting and it being a sharp hard 90 degree turn. All heater hoses are new now, secured with oem style spring clamps. (yes pia but effective) The foam I used as insulation had melted some, most likely from my high speed runs home last fall at 2am. ( no heat sheild on exh manifold) I used a sabre saw mounted upside down in a old router table to help make the gasket. worked well. heres a few pictures from today. More to do tomorrow, not much more and still a hell of a lot better then that 2.2 gm water pump on the hhr I just did. Oh- tech tip of the day, a hair dryer works great for warming cold hoses to ease removal. I actually bought my own to have in the bottom of the toolbox for such jobs. I did cut the circuit breaker plug off it and added a vaccum cleaner cord for more cord length.

I had a head lamp back in the 70's. It had a big reflector and used a 9volt lantern battery that hung from your belt.

I think you are making that up. You had one of these.

I have that same welder, it's a tank and welds great... do yourself a favor and pick up some 6011 3/32" or 7018 in the same diameter (or 1/8", but 3/32 is probably more suited to the project), set it up for DC (I think electrode negative, I don't remember, I never move the leads from where they are...), 6011 will be around 90A I believe and 7018 will be around 100, either should weld decent... Don't know what you paid but I got mine at GoodWill for $20 with leads and it even looked almost new... if I'm burning something together it is my go to, if I'm doing something more complicated on thinner stuff I'll go for my wire feed options...

Scott,

i picked up 10lb of 7018 1/8” as I’m going with thick steel. Thanks for the amperages, those were what I was going to start out with.

I’ve got to run a 50A circuit to feed it, I’ve got a 30A dryer recept. in the garage but I’m leery of using it.

I paid $150 and that’s a fair price for my area. You got a steal at $20!

Kicked the ranger to the barn so I could get the tractor inside before snowmegedden 2022 hits and we get somewhere between 3 and 18 inches of snow.

30amp breaker should enough to run 1/8th rod.

Good rule of thumb is to use the decimal value of the rod thickness for your starting amps, then tune it from there. 1/8th rod, set it around 125amps, ect. Every rod, and every machine is gonna run different, so you will always have to fine tune as you go.

Yep, racsan, I was there tonight. Under the Ranger, trying to remove the starter, cursing Ford for putting three bolts that not only went into the starter flange from different directions, but whose heads required different sized wrenches. Wife called me, saying "Bill, it's getting cold and it's getting dark. Don't you think it's time to come in?"

I wasn't planning to come in anytime soon, until the oil filter I removed in order to gain better access to the top of the starter, tipped over and spilled its contents in the worst possible place: RIGHT ON THE POWER STEERING PUMP PULLEY AND BELT.

Didn't have the time or inclination to clean the belt or remove it, so screw it, it's New Years Eve and I haven't even started dinner for the family yet.

Indoors I went. Planning to do the cleanup tomorrow...

Happy New Year, Pal!

Got the ranger back together, the good: no leaks, went together quickly . but…, the bad: still not getting warm enough, I think the issue is the thermostat doesnt fit like it should in the housing . After a 8-mile run my laser temp checker said it was only at 170. And quickly started dropping off as its idling. Just about have to pull the fan (again) to be able to work on it. When I first got the truck there was a pinhole in the neck right below the radiator hose connection . I clamped a peice of rubber there for awhile then eventually replaced the whole thing (napa part) Hopefully I can find the original & see if a thermostat fits better. I remember my ‘88 always had a bad airlocking issue when the cooling system was refilled and Ive never had that issue with this 2.3 I also could get a thermostat that fits inside the hose (ford N series tractor) I might try that first, assuming the tractor thermostat isnt a fortune. Spent rest of the day finishing a ventless propane heater project I started before thanksgiving. That stainless gas line is awesome, drilling through block isnt. My cordless harbour freight drill worked good, maybe too good. couple times it caught & spun the drill around , twisted my wrist & once it got me in the nose.

Edit: scratch that N-series tractor thermostat, they are $25, only available in 160 degree, and im not even sure the size (diameter of thermostat to fit snugly in hose) is correct. Time to explore other options, maybe another year of the lima has a better design to keep the thermostat in place. I’ll see if I can find the original housing first, I tend to hang on to stuff I should throw away- I still have a 3.0 V6 radiator from a engine I gave away almost 2 years ago.

Took it camping. Last trip of 2021 and first trip of 2022 all in one.

How old is the heater core?

How old is the heater core?
about 3 years I think, When I had the blow dryer out warming up hoses to remove I used it on each side of the core & would easily blow coolant out. Engine just isn’t getting warm enough, my laser heat -checker confirms it, 170 after a hard 8 mile drive in 4rth gear 3,000 rpms.
I had a bad feeling when the thermostat didnt fit snugly in the housing. At least I have the car back on the road for work monday, wasnt sure Id get it back together in time, The ranger is so much easier to work on.

So I assume you cardboarded the radiator and pinched the upper hose off?
