What did you do to your Ranger today? (Part Deux!)

Went junkin, fixed the map light, dumped coolant in it and tested the efans.

If you're mig welding (not flux core) forget about laying a bead and spot stitch. Lay down 5-6 fast overlapping spot welds at a time moving to different locations to avoid putting too much heat in one area. You cannot do this with flux core though.

If you're flux core welding... try cursing at it? :dunno:
It was flux core I havent upgraded to the bottle yet, I think I will need to if im ever going to try to weld thin metal again by the sounds of it. And by your comment I'm going to take the fact I got it done as a win, even though it felt like multiple failures lol.

Drove the 2011 to SAR training. Managed to not get rained on even though there were storm pockets all over the place.

How did dumping coolant in the map light fix the map light?

This morning driving to the airport at O'dark 30 (left the house at 4) I tested out the heater, turns out it was 52F but tested the heater anyway... normally if I turn the fan up the air gets colder after a couple minutes... I had to turn it down for about the first time...

Once it gets below 50 we'll see how much better it is...

I wish it was like my '90 that will roast me out on floor/defrost in 15F weather with the fan turned up...

replaced the nasty disintegrating cruise controll buttons. Go a set from the junk yard a few years ago. Something to be aware of if you have a 97, the electronics are different than any of the other years... so I had to disassemble the pods and reuse the electric board

before and after shots. The old ones were really sticky and crumbly

Just curious - why a junkyard rather than a new set for $20 or so?

Better question, what the hell did you do to the old ones?

And why is your text so big?

excellent question.

because the $20 set does not fit the 97 Ranger (at least the last time I checked) to get new for the 97, it is about $100 :(

Another good question. I blame Samsung for that. it was the default text on my phone when I posted it.

Interesting. Most of the info I found indicated that the '98+ set really does fit but was just mismarked.

Hmmm... He never did reply if it truly did work... if that is the case I may just order a set. the right side one has a bit of a crack in the center of the button but they definitely look better than the old ones.

the one difference that I did notice is that the right hand side 97 control was missing the second pin, where the junkyard versions that I got off of a 98+ had all of the pins.

Here is what I found bottom is original. Wiring harness going into the connector has that wire clipped off about an inch out of the connector.

If you want to look at it next weekend and there's time, we can certainly pop the controls off mine so you can try them.

Side note... do your buttons light up? I've never gotten clarification on whether mine should or not. They definitely do on later Rangers.
