All,

The other day while troubleshooting a thump I get when I shift from 1st to 2nd and from 2nd to 3rd (while the clutch is still pushed in) I noticed that if I push up on the drive shaft right at the vibration dampener the drive shaft moves up and down about an 1/8" of an inch at the extension housing and makes a clunk sound. It's not the vibration damper making the clunk. It's definitely at the extension housing. And there's an ATF spray pattern on the bottom of the truck right there at the end of the extension housing.

And so I was wondering if that 1/8" movement and clunk is normal? If it isn't, is there a bearing and seal in the extension housing? Can they be changed out with the trans still in the truck or does it take a complete tear down of the trans? From doing a little Google search it looks like I can change the seal relatively easy with a special tool but I'm not finding much on any bearing.

Oh and if pictures or a video is needed I can certainly get those.

Thanks!!

Would be nice to know. My 2000 is doing the same thing. Although mine no longer has the dampener it was hung up with a coat hanger when i bought the truck and they want like 150 bucks for a new one so i didnt get a new one when i put new ujoints in.

No bearing. There is a press fit bushing in extension housing. You should not have any movement in slip yoke. More than likely the slip yoke has gone bad and grooved the bushing. You can change out the bushing while in the vehicle but requires a special puller and installer. Look close at the yoke for any damage.

it is not recommended to change the 2wd output shaft slip yoke bushing.

If there is special tooling to do this job I've never seen it or heard of it...

I've never seen the bushing available by itself...

Besides, it is quicker and easier to simply replace the entire tail-shaft housing
this can easily be done in the chassis...
