Hi all, I recently picked up a 97 3.0 auto with 182k on it. Truck needs a little work so I'm taking my time and going through each system. The rear brakes are shot so I'm going to completely rebuild them; replace the shoes, springs, wheel cylinders, drums, auto adjust, ect...

When I get in there is it worth replacing the axle seals/bearings if there's no signs of leaking? Or should I leave them be if there's no leaking. I'm planning on changing out the diff oil regardless (doubt its ever been done).

What gear oil does the 7.5 3.45 non-limited rear take (code 84).

Also, the parking brake barely works, looks like its the two rear cables as they're rusted to hell. Is the front cable the only one that's variable length depending on wheelbase or do the rears need to be matched to the wheelbase too?

if the rear seals not leaking leave them be. Replace the fronts when you take the disks off and do the bearings.

Cant help right now with the gear lube but it will be 75-140 Maybe (off top of head).

Cant help with the E brake cables mine have never been messed with! When you flush be ready to R&R the ABS pod

Are the ABS systems known to be shotty in these guys? It it just a replacement typically?

when I 1st did the brakes on my 94 the abs failed shortly after. Dont know why just did. replaced the box and no further issues even after more brake jobs.

By ABS box are you referring to the wheel position sensor that's on the differential pumpkin?

No, he is probably talking about the RABS valve on the line. As far as ABS goes on a 97, if you have 4WABS (4 wheel ABS) there aren't many issues, usually just the sensor in the rear diff.

If you have the RABS (rear ABS) system it only works for the rear wheels, and while in 97 it was better than the early versions of RABS used in the 80s and early 90s it still isn't worth having.

The 7.5 should use 80-90 gear oil. If you are going to be opening the diff anyway I would replace the axle seals, but unless there is an issue I would not mess with the bearings.

I'll do the seals then while I'm in there. It's cheap and easy.

It's only RWD, I'll check if it even has ABS before I do the job. I don't think I've seen an abs module or anything so far but I haven't been explicitly looking for it.

I've actually got a gallon of 80w-90 sitting around so that's convenient.
