Twister 85 B2 Build

Got my oil filter relocation mounted hopefully in its permamnent spot. I made a little bracket that bolts onto a factory location on the radiator support.

Cut the tab off my t case, just need to grind it down a little.

Also questions on explorer setup. Do I need to change to the explorer t-stat water neck or can I use the one that's already on my engine (pic below). I grabbed the explorer one while I was at the junkyard so if I need to it would be simple.

What is this hollow metal bar that sticks out behind the timing cover and is it needed?

Also got by timing cover today :)

That hollow metal bar is where you hook a oil pressure sensor or fitting for a manual gauge. If you don't ho anything into it and leave it open, be prepared to have oil come out of it when the engine runs.

That too is where I have my oil filter mounted, only I used existing holes that my truck had to mount it. It's nice not having to be under the truck to fight it off.

I do want to run an oil cooler at some point but since my rad sits so far forward, I doubt know where I can run one yet.

You will need the 90* housing to clear everything else. Also make sure to get one that has a port for a temp sensor.

At O'Reilly's when I asked for an Explorer one they didn't have a hole, one for a 1995 Mustang had a hole.

+1 on the oil pressure tube. If you are only running an idiot light you don't need one otherwise you will need it for the sensor. Mine had an idiot light so I used the tube off of my 2.8 which worked fine but wasn't as long.

When you put it all together don't forget the timing pointer. :icon_thumby:

Yeah I need to grab a timing pointer from something. Do the explorers have one on them? Also I have a temp sensor plugged into the intake manifold so I think ill be OK with the t stat neck having no hole.

Reading through you write up with the explorer FEAD, I need to remove my oil slinger. Should I replace the timing set with one from an explorer? And do timing sets come with a new bolt, or can I use the bolt that is on there now.

No, the Explorers have a crankshaft position sensor in the pointers place. That is why your balancer has all the funky bumps going around it.

I have my gauge sender plugged into my intake and the fan controller in the t-stat housing.

I just removed the oil slinger and reinstalled the bolt and washer. IIRC you needed to change your timing set so if you haven't do that, I didn't change mine to one for an Explorer set though. It is still the one I got when I asked for a double roller that fit a 302 out of a '87 Crown Vic.

Same here but I still need to get a working temp gauge, right now have a temp sensor plug off my old 2.8 filling the hole till then.

Ahh, i didn't think of a thermostat for my electric fan. I do need to replace my timing chain, it is quite floppy, just didn't know if the bolts were different for different models the 302 went into.

I got a timing chain set from auto zone for $15 for an 85 mustang gt. It's a double chain/sprocket just like what my engine had plus it has adjustments to be able to advance/retard the cam shaft timing. I left mine in the stock piston.

Ok, went from zero clearance between the water pump and radiator to about 2 3/4 inch. I need to take my engine to the machine shop to get the water pump bolt taken care of then i can hit this thing head on.

That's with the explorer FEAD? I need to do this sooner then I think.

Btw, what rad are you going to be using?

Yes that's with the explorer FEAD, I am happy with the amount of room it gave me, still not enough for the Taurus fan but ill figure that put down the road.

My biggest thing now is getting the engine to the machine shop to get the water pump bolt out.

There are other fans you can run that are thinner that are pullers. Or you can get a good set of pusher fans. Or even do the setup that 85_Ranger4x4 has to, flex fan puller and a pusher too assist as needed.

Don't forget to put some sort of sealant on those four bolts around the water ports. They are open to coolant on the back side which is why they are so fond of rusting and eventually being broken off.

A multi-stage fan controller would be nice, mine is dead until 190* and then it runs just as hard as it can until it catches up. With the low pro flex fan I don't hear much out of it unless the truck sits for awhile, if I keep it moving (or get it moving) the flex fan takes care of most of it.

Yeah I need to buy some sealer, I was just at autozone forgot to get some :(. On to the power steering line for the explorer FEAD. I bought the line, you said I need a crush washer. Does it go on the the pump side or the steering box side? It came with what looks like the washer on the pump side.

Took the thermostat housing off, when the bottom bolt came out so did a pile of dust. Looks like a previous owner let coolant leak and it got into the bolt hole. It appears some of the threads right inside the boot hole are kind of screwed, hopefully I can just get longer bolt.
