Is there any variations in the rear main seals on 302's? I know they went from a 2 piece to a 1 piece but that's all I know. Do all the 1 piece seals interchange or were the different over the years?

Searching various years and models with 302s it seems once they went to the one piece they all took the same one. So I got that replaced. Went to the junk yard today to get water pump bolts as the hardware store doesn't sell bolts in small enough length incraments. Got all the ones I needed, was a little scared at the condition they were in tell I soaked them in clr for an hour, they cleaned up nicely. I am going to try and get the timing cover and water pump on tonight, I need to pick up a clutch slave cylinder before I can throw the engine back in.

Bolts after clr, before one looked like I could break it in half because it was so rusty.

Now that I look at your fixed bolt hole closer it almost looks like the guy did a helicoil to it, nothing wrong with doing that either just as good of a fix.

Alot of people that do restorations go to the JY for OE bolts.

Any tips on getting a pilot bearing out besides a puller?

Put the new one back in with a rubber or plastic hammer.

Other then that, a puller to get it out.

Pack it full of grease, find a snug fitting bolt, or the clutch alignment tool.
Line it up, and quickly smack it in there with a hammer.
It hydraulically pushes it out from the inside. It can get messy...

I forgot about that technique, been awhile since I've done that.

Tried that and wet newspaper (saw it on another site) and neither worked. Wonder if autozone rents out puller. Just gotta replace that and engine and trans can go back in.

I would assume they have the puller you need.

Now I do know of a way to make a homemade one but it's easier made then described how to do it.

I guess cool does not mean good :(

Crumbled when I took it off.

I've always used a 3/8 extension to get the pilot bearing out instead of a bolt. I put electrical tape on it until it makes a tight seal then hit it with a hammer.
