Edit: WHOOPS!!! 1995 EXPLORER, my bad, those did have a similar style of diff.

I didn't realize RBV's came with a CAD? I thought those were only on Jeeps?

Either way, it'll have a big shifter thingy on the tube part. An example off of a Dana 30 Jeep axle:

**edit again: Not having a CAD doesn't mean it won't work, in fact most people ditch the CAD in favor of a solid shaft. The only downfall of not running a CAD is that your front driveshaft will turn all the time. Potentially leading to some otherwise minor wear issues (which would still be pretty minor truthfully), and some minor drops in fuel economy. As important as fuel economy is now days, most trucks and 4x4's don't come with CAD's or manual hubs anymore, they're just engaged 100% all the time. If it made that much of a difference you'd still see more of the older styles. If it fits in there, I'd run it.

Well you did F-up unfortunately, but not from anything to do with a CAD.

The '95 differential is a completely different housing, and style, of suspension. The '95 would still be under the infamous "TTB" style of suspension, they switched to a more traditional A-arm IFS for the 1998 model year.

Also, aren't CAD's only of the front of Jeeps? I didn't even know Rangers had them?

SUPPOSEDLY this is more what you're looking for, it'll have the long tube on one end and mounting points:

I say supposedly because I've never actually messed with post-TTB Rangers.

sorry i didnt specify, but its a 95 explorer front diff that i bought. so not the ttb, how can i tell the difference between the cad explorer diff and the non cad explorer diff?

I don't think the explorers ever came with a center-axle-disconnect. It was a feature on jeeps with solid axles.

This is a picture of a CAD. You're axle will have something very similar on it if it has one. It will be on the long part of the tube.

However, I do not believe Explorers or Rangers ever came with a CAD.

95/96 Explorers has a CAD that was vacuum operated. 97 they went to live axle.

I thought those were the vacuum hubs that everyone seems to hate on. Were the hubs after they made the jump to live axle then?

yeah haha i hate all this vacuum operated crap. problem is, i cant remember whether its from a 95 or not. would i be able to tell just by looking if its the cad type diff? or am i going to have to pull the cover? it looks exactly like any other dana 35 ifs diff....:icon_confused:

If CAD it will have a shift fork on the passenger side of the axle tube with a vacuum pot on it.

Explorers never used the PVH hubs. They used the CAD for the first couple years of the new body/suspension style, then went live axle and stayed that way. Just the 98-00 rangers got the PVH then went live axle after that.

cool thanks, i finally found some pictures of the cad type diffs and luckily mine isnt! haha had me worried.
