1997 ranger with 4/97 production date...2.5?

Don't feel bad...when I go to a parts store I have to try to remember what year of truck said part came from...

I know that feeling... on my truck:
-1986 thunderbird engine
-1990 ignition system
-Explorer drivetrain

There's some more little things mixed about too

That is what I found...the filter was smaller, but the O ring was in the same place...and that's how I checked the fit...put the two end to end...and the O ring lined up exactly...eased my mind on that part...

Good to know! Thanks guys for your wisdom!

Its no big deal, mechanics will usually use a filter they have on the shelf as long as it fits. I usually do the oil changes on my moms escape, except for the last time, she had a shop do it, they put a different filter on it. It really doesnt effect anything.

Yours sounds a bit more complicated than mine...I managed to use the drive train (transmission anyways) from the original vehicle but had a heck of a time mixing and matching the drive shaft connectors for the 2 piece shaft...wanted to look into a one piece at some point but finally got that sorted out...

I've heard a few stories about this not working out...like when a tech (I won't say mechanic because I don't think that was the case) thought the part screwed on right (oil filter) but when it came to taking it off it required a bit more force than usual...not a big deal as long as there are no leaks...but talk about pita...

Take a look at the side of the block behind the exhaust manifold,if it is a 2.5 it will be casted right in the side of the block.Use the big filter, your engine will have a litttle more oil.
