Average temp for mine is HOTT! the temp gauge always reads between the N on normal and the red line for hot. I question if it is really running that hot because if it is, I should have melted that beast down by now. I think that you are correct with that push rod but its been so long since I had to set my lash that I"m not 100%

An easy way to tell is to line up the valve with the port it is lined up with.

Chiltons manual gives specs on valve lash. My 2.8 runs around 200-205 with a 195 deg. thermostat. In the process of changing it to a 180 now. I did drill the heads to promote better cooling, whether it helped or not I don`t know, but it made sense to me.

mine is running about 205-210 on an aftermarket gauge. the original one gave out a long time ago. sorry, i forget which thermostat i have in it. all i know is it heats up fast and puts out tons of nice hot air from the heater which i really need up here! :D
