The other day I found out my distrubutor is loose, and the hold down bolt seems tight. I looked in my repair manual and it said the timing for a EEC-IV ignition is set from the factory and not adjustable. I have not checked it with a timing light yet but I know it is changing when I turn the dist. My question is, is my dizzy just worn out or is there something I missing? I'm scared to keep driving it with it backfiring.

I plan on doing the duraspark conversion but don't have the funds yet.

The distributor should be held in place with a clamp. The hold down bolt puts pressure on the clamp keeping it from turning. Take the bolt out and make sure the threads are good. Sounds as if it is not clamping properly.:)shady

The timing on TFI-IV ignition systems is adjustable. You need to unplug the SPOUT connector (yellow wire if I remember right) at the TFI module on the distributor and set the base timing to 10* (I think, you may want to double check that) BTDC.

The TFI dizzys rarely wear out. They have no moving parts other than the rotor. All of the spark advance is done electronically.

The bearings were out of mine, it had a lot of play and it made grinding sounds when I was playing with it right before I pitched after I put in Duraspark.

Also check the rotor, there are two screws that hold it in that have been known to back out. If your rotor is loose it would goof with your ignition timing.

Thanks guys.

The hold down bolt looks tight but I didn't really mess with it much. I double check that though.

As far as everything else, its all tight...
