Fuel gauge works on and off, can't make up it's mind. All other dash gauges work fine. One day the fuel gauge will read...then later that day I'll start it up again and bingo, it works again. Ideas?

There is an anti-slosh circuit on the back of the gauge that can cause intermittent operation, have to pull the dash to get to it.

There is a connector under the truck with 4 wires, 2 are the ground and power for the fuel pump, Blk and Pink/blk wires
2 are the ground and power for the fuel gauge, orange and yellow/white wires

Could be a dirty connection

Would you happen to have a picture of the 4 wires under the truck?

Fuel pump assembly float

My 1992 Ranger XLT 2WD had a similar problem until one day the guage completely stopped working. Turned out the float on the fuel pump assembly would no longer float thus returning the signal that the gas tank was always empty. I replaced the fuel pump assembly and now the fuel guage works. I also replaced the fuel filler neck while I was at it since it was also leaking when filling up the tank.

This series of 10 YouTube videos was extremely helpful to diagnose and show you exactly what to do. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UyvqM6yAljI

Good Luck,
