i have an 84 ranger 2.8 v6 4x4, when it cold outside the speedometer doesnt move at all untill im moving for a while then starts to work again the needle also kind of jerks as its moving up when working, and the jerking needle seems to follow the pattern of this squeak thats coming from the front of the truck some where, so my question is does anybody think the spedo and the squeak are related and if so where does the spedometer get its reading from(transmission, front wheel) any ideas, thanks

Take it out of the transfer case, it easy to get to. put a new o ring on it and see if you have enough fluid in your transfer case while your at it, spray it with some WD- 40 and put it back it and check it out. I took mine out recently when I rebuilt my tranny and sprayed it and when I put it back in it didn't bounce anymore! If that doesn't fix it, then take apart your gauge cluster to get to it and spray down the tube with WD-40 and check your cable for wear.

Mine always bounced a little on my 87, it seemed to do it more when it was colder. I thought it was just the design and the way it functioned.
