The air conditioning of my 1999 Ranger XLT has started operating intermittantly. It will put out good cool air for about 5 minutes then becomes inrregular. My initial thought was a bad clutch.

I took it to an air conditioning shop and they have diagnosed the problem as a short in the computer. The truck has no other problems so I have doubts that the computer is the source of the problem. Has anyone else had a similar problem?

The only way the computer (PCM) would shut your AC off is with the WOT relay. The N/C contacts are used in this relay, and the PCM picks this relay to shut the AC compressor off. In addition to the WOT signal from the TBS, the PCM will also shut the AC compressor off with the WOT relay, if the ECT tells the PCM the engine is running too hot.
