I have a 1994 Ranger with a 289 and C4 out of a 1967 Mustang. When I did the
converson this engine and trany was available free, so I used it. I have installed a cluster from a 1994 Explorer and it has a tach. The tach would have received a siginal from the computer to make it work. I am not using the computer since the 289 has a carb. So, my question is ........ What kind of siginal can I use from the engine to make the tach work? It looks like the tan/yellow wire is what sends the siginal to the tach.

Welcome to TRS :)

1994 Explorer would have had the 4.0l V6 engine, with a distributorless EDIS-6 module(ICM) and a coil pack for spark.
Tach hooks up to ICM.
Computer was not used for tach signal in 1994, 1995 and up yes

You don't mention what spark system you have on the V8?

But if using a single ignition coil then the tach signal will be at Coil's "-" terminal, same as all distributor spark systems.

And you can hook the tan wire to coil's "-" terminal
Problem will be the tach is setup for a V6, i.e. 3 "sparks" = 1 RPM, V8 has 4 "sparks" for 1 RPM.
So tach will work but will be incorrect

There are several V8 conversion posts out there for Ranger/Explorer stock tachs.
Explorers did have V8 tachs from 1996 and up, but not sure they are plug and play into 1994 Explorer cluster
A few posts I read mentioned using the "guts" from a Full Size Bronco V8 tach in the Ranger cluster

You can also use a Tach universal adapter, read here: http://www.therangerstation.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169197

Thanks. What was I thinking. Of course it's not going to work correctly since it's the tach expecting a siginal from a six.
I really just changed the cluster to get a working gas gauge again and that worked. I really dont need a tach anyway.
